To only bath DD twice a week?

BucketAndSpadeAtTheReady · 01/06/2013 19:21

DD is 9 months, she did have bad excma (sp?) and baths made this worse so we've only ever done 2 a week, but it's not so bad now so she could cope with more.

She doesn't smell, and I wash her face in the morning and after any food with baby flannels.
Everyone I know who's mentioned baths seem to do a daily one for bedtime, but she doesn't seem to enjoy them much, should she be having more, or is 2 a week (or more if there's a nappy or food explosion) ok?

At 9 months it is probably fine, although come toddlerhood a daily bath might be necessary. DS (now 2,3) had a daily bath at 9 months, but he has always loved water and although he had eczema then, I only used to put him in shallow tepid water with just some oats in, so no shampoo or baby bath. I found the cream soaked in better if his skin was moist, just washed, and we kept bath time short, only about 5 mins.

If he didn't like water though, we would not have bathed him every day. I hope your DD grows out of her eczema soon.

I saw a skin specialist for my dc excema. I had been bathing them 2/3 times a week too to curb the condition but I was told:

  1. Washing is essential as the grease and grime make the itchiness worse
  2. Although water can be drying it is known to be good for this kind of skin as its good for skin to soak in some of it to curb dryness.
  3. When bathing don't use normal washes (I was using Simple products and then later oils in bath). Normal washes strip natural oils and the traditional oil based things doctors prescribe to add to bath water are no good as cant clean skin of irritating grease and grime with more grease. Should wash only with a cream based wash was like Epaderm cream or Aqueose cream or fairly new to market Q2 cream which s what my doctor prescribed. After a short bth, Rub in cream to DAMP skin as cream seals in the water so good for re moisture.
  4. For actual treatment - for e first time in 5 years my dc condition has been totally curbed by this - doctors can prescribe a fairly new cream called Protopic. Think they will only prescribe to over 2 years old but worth knowing abt it so you can ask later or research if you want. Seriously, I cannot describe what a difference just one application made. By 3rd application I could have cried as it had all cleared up. We had suffered with medium to severe excema outbreaks ince dc were born. We're on week 3 (been told to continue for 3 weeks twice a day, then reduced to twice a week and then once a week and then just stop). Apparently it can be tht the eczema never returns although if it does thn we just re-start the cream. I'm hoping tht dr is right and that we see reduced flare ups.

And to keep using Q2 to bathe thm and use also as a daily moisturiser when not using the Protopic cream.

Also, bcos their skin is no longer itchy they sleep better and longer.

Sorry if this has been all covered by someone. I read op when first posted and then had to dash but promised myself I would come back to reply in case I can save someone from years of helplessly watching children in discomfort. This is just my experience btw so not saying any other advice is invalid! I know different things work for different ppl.

Also I don't always do baths as such. Just stand them in bath and wash down with cream and hose down with shower. Less faff for me and quicker whilst also getting rid of dirt and grime.

My lot get 3 baths a week, DD2 has eczema as well.

Funnily enough DS has been having nightly baths all last week as he's been playing in the dirt every day and I've noticed 2 new patches of eczema on his elbow joints and between his fingers Hmm

only bath my Dt's once a week, 1 Dt had eczema as a baby and I was going mental trying to control it, my job covered skin conditions at the time, but in adult hospital workers, attended a study day and had full access to dermatologists, dermatology nurses and reps from companies who provide skin care treatment.
at the time I was following the advice of top and tail daily and bath bi daily.
they all told me I was bathing too often, once a week was enough, just extra baths if properly dirty, i have stuck to this and now 8 he still has dry skin and the odd area of eczema, but basically good.
the other upside was several of the reps would pop into my work place and drop off baby wipes and child skin care products :) i liked this as they new there was no payback I only dealt with adults and I could on a few products have got on prescription, so free anyway to me, they saved the NHS a fortune, in doctors appointment and products, I oddly have never recommended any of them, as the first advice on weekly baths to me seemed to be the real reason his skin improved.
I did however pass a lot of the products on to friends when I got a glut but my advice was repeating the weekly bath advice.
funny thing was as a child of the early 70's, I only ever got a bath weekly, without emollients, just soap, it was the norm back then, I had eczema behind my knees and elbows, still suffer.
So I advocate less baths, unless child encrusted and use emollients if they have dry skin.

At that age I used to bath DS2 (with exzema) about once every 7-10 days. He is now 4 and has at least one a week (Sunday). Although at the moment he is having more as he keeps pooing his pants.

MrsHoarder · 10/06/2013 00:25

We do it daily but DS is a messy eater (and before that a sicky dribbler) so gets a rather "foody" smell if left for more than a day. Its part of his bedtime routine, but only if DH does it, apparently I'm not allowed to, and he does a plank of wood impression and will only let me sluice him whilst he stands in the bath.

Y.N.B.U at all as we all do what works for us and our children don't we and if 2 bathes a week suit you D.D then that's absolutly fine
I mean I used to bath my D.D (now a teenager) twice a day. I'm a total clean freak and my friend said "Oh that's too much. However even now my D.D gets 2 baths a day. xxx

minibmw2010 · 10/06/2013 10:26

We do it every night as he's a typical boy into everything in the garden so is generally properly dirty. We use double base on him every night and bath is usually just water.

InsanelyBrainDeprived · 10/06/2013 13:13

I bath my boys every night too. They are usually grubby by the end of the day and I like to send them to bed clean and fresh.

Doesn't take long and they enjoy it. However I have missed the odd night if its late. No big deal.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 10/06/2013 15:01

YANBU - twice a week is fine at that age. My 3 and 5 year olds now bathe every other day which I think is fine unless they are particularly grubby for some reason. Obviously they are cleaner after their baths but they are clean enough in between. Daily bathing is a waste of water for such young children so bad from an environmental point of view.

i am also a firm believer in the hygiene hypothesis.

mine get twice a week approximately, but only wash hair/use soap once. although, i try to make sure they're barefoot as much as possible (also good for building strong immune systems) so they have really dirty feet a lot of the time so i do wash those with a flannel and warm water before bed.

also, i try to make sure kids get out in the sunshine without sunblock whenever possible in this country to increase their vitamin d levels and i've heard that vitamin d needs a bit of time to be absorbed by the skin so better not to wash every night!

FrenchJunebug · 04/07/2013 14:23

mine is two and I bath is less than that! Babies don't sweat and do not need to be bath at all unless covering themselves in vomit or poo.

Airwalk79 · 04/07/2013 18:46

Mine have never had a bath every day... 2 or 3 times a week. Kids don't sweat, so unless there actually grubby they don't need constant washing.
