To wonder why every single boy's 18th birthday card is about drinking?

It's my brother's birthday tomorrow. I've trawled the shops looking for a bday card for him and literally every single card for an 18 yr old boy has either something about being legal to drink or a rude joke. I get that the typical 18 year old bloke might be into beer and rude jokes but this is massively stereotyping. Why not have a bit of variety? My brother doesn't give a rat's ass about drinking his first legal pint and some of these jokes would make his bones blush!

Does depend where you get your cards tbh, specialist card shops like card factory are the worst i find. I have a funny 18th and 3 different fathers day cards (ddad, dstepdad, dfil) in my drawer and none of them fulfil your sterotypes.

YABU - what else are 18 year olds meant to do?

LadyBeagleEyes · 01/06/2013 22:58

Moonpig are good, you can choose and personalise any one you want.
I can't wait till ds is 18 though (next month) as he can pick me up a bottle of wine when he goes down the shop,

LittleprincessinGOLDrocks · 01/06/2013 23:00

Not much help now, but just checked the Moonpig selection for 18 year olds and found a good selection of cards without beer or cars. Things like name and age written in lights etc.

I tend to make the majority of cards I send, but I must admit I struggle to find stamps, toppers or decoupage that don't feature stereotypes. For example Father's day will feature a vast array of fishing, cars and VW campers. That said I am lucky that FIL, Dad and DH like those things.
I have found craft CD roms. like create and graft have a good selection on them, but only if you like Boofle / Tatty teddy.

The best milestone cards I've seen are the ones which say how much a loaf of bread cost, who else was born, how much a pint of milk cost etc in the year they were born

YANBU

My neice is 9 and I have terrible trouble getting her cards, ever since she was five. She does not like pink, fairies, princesses, ballet or dresses.

She likes martial arts, playing electric guitar, climbing trees, beating up her younger brother and winning anything she puts her mind to.

Even moon pig can't help.

Last time I managed to find a card with a female footballer on it. Best I could do. I also wish card companies wouldn't stick to stereotyping. Very annoying when we try and tell girls to have a positive self image and make the most of available opportunities in life.

Oh god, birthday cards. For some reason everyone buys me girly ones. Glitter, shoes, handbags...I have never liked this stuff. My grandmother apologises every year that she couldn't find a better one, bless her.

Give me a rude joke card any day! It's what I buy for almost everyone else Grin

Noideaaboutanything · 02/06/2013 08:30

Waffly wher was that wrapping paper from, I have to have that!

shiningcadence · 02/06/2013 16:30

I have to have some of that wrapping paper too Grin

Thank you for all your suggestions, some great cards/websites that I've noted for next occasion.

I'd tried Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury's, Marks & Spencer, Card Factory and another card shop, can't remember what it was called. I should've been more organised and looked online I think. In the end I just bought a 'Brother' card.

Wish I could make my own but I'm crap at craft :(

All cards are shit. Accepting this and moving on is key here.

WafflyVersatile · 02/06/2013 19:12

I dont remember, sorry! It was years ago. May have been fuck off too.

shiningcadence · 02/06/2013 19:18

allegra Grin

I know this is really sad but I love when I receive a card where it's obvious a lot of thought has gone into it, i.e a lovely verse that fits how the person feels about me or a picture that's something I'd fine either beautiful or amusing or a handmade one someone's put a lot of effort into I actually keep said cards in a special box

I guess I also want the recipients of my cards to feel the same way, though I accept that most people aren't as weirdly sentimental as me Grin

Have a look on www.etsy.com if you have time for the card to be posted. There's a lot of alternatives on there.
