To Go back to my gp on the basis of a Internet search

Hi all I have also posted this in health as i could really appreciate some good honest mumsnet advice. It's fair to say I am a hypochondriac at times particularly regarding my kids health so I would appreciate some honest logical advice. Basically my 5 year old had what I thought was a simple viral infection a fortnight ago, he had a day or 2 of a fever, a sore throat, a rash sores on his mouth and a white/ yellow coated tongue, he recovered quickly but I took him to his gp as a precaution mainly due to the rash. His GP said it was a viral infection and to give him calpol. My son appeared fully recovered fairly quickly and went back to school 48 hours later. However this past few days I have noticed peeling on his fingers and when I went on the dreaded Internet just to see if there was any creams to use etc one of the conditions to cause this was Kawasaki disease which if left untreated can cause heart problems. Some of the symptoms such as the rash and the mouth sores were relevant to my son but others such as the red eyes and 5 days of fever weren't. However now that his fingers are peeling within the timeframe of it being this illness,I am wondering whether to go back to the gps. The thing is I don't want to come across as a know it all/ over anxious parent and my husband thinks my son is fine and would appear more ill if this was the case. The peeling fingers are the only symptoms he currently has and he is very well in himself!

OK, I mean this kindly, but YABU to go back to drs re your DS.

It might be worth considering talking to someone about your fears/anxiety, however?

EnlightenedOwl · 01/06/2013 17:34

Agree with poster above.

CloudsAndTrees · 01/06/2013 17:35

Your ds would have had a high fever for at least 5 dats for it to possibly be kawasaki disease as I understand it, so you can rule it out on that basis.

Try and avoid dr google, you will only worry yourself sick (I speak as a recovering dr googlaholic)

scaevola · 01/06/2013 17:39

If it was Kawasaki, the symptoms would have occurred together, and would have lasted over 5 days.

If the peeling fingers are severe enough in themselves then a visit about them might be in order. But I'd say that would only be if they are swollen or causing him pain (suggesting infection for which ABs might be indicated).

MogTheForgetfulCat · 01/06/2013 17:40

My DS had peeling fingers once. We went to GP and he said it was probably 'scalded skin syndrome' which can be a post-viral symptom, especially if the infection was a staph one (I think). No treatment needed, it just got better over time.

MogTheForgetfulCat · 01/06/2013 17:42

Meant to say, it does look quite weird, and YANBU to be a bit concerned Smile.

Montybojangles · 01/06/2013 17:42

I'm torn between wanting to laugh like a loon (sorry), give you a big reassuring hug, or tell you to get a little bit of a grip.

Google Kawasaki disease as images, rather than web and you will see exactly what is meant by rash/sores in mouth, on body, red eyes etc.
He would have had AT LEAST 5 days of a very high temp, not a day or 2. Maybe he just has dry skin, or eczema, or an allergic reaction?

Certainly go to your GP if you are concerned, as we are just virtual beings on here, as unable to diagnose your sons problem as your earlier google search is. Your Dr went through many years of medical training to be able to answer your questions and hopefully put your mind at ease.

My dd also had peeling on her hands, some weeks after a particularly nasty virus, high temperature, sore throat.

This was 5 years ago and she seems to have lived to tell the tale!
