To not take DD to Doctors when she has a chesty cough and cold?

She's nearly 8 months old, poor mite had a nasty chesty cough and is very snotty.

She seems fine in herself but her breathing was very noisy and snory last night (though she slept well)

I know Docs won't be able to do anything, so am not planning on taking her and DH definitely thinks it would be a waste of time. But I do wonder if I should anyway, just to be on the safe side?

If she's breathing fast or shallow, get her checked out.If her breathing is normal speed, it can be noisy and snory and that doesn't matter.

Always go for the safe side & go to the doctor to have a check up

My Dd had a cough a few weeks ago (was 8 weeks old), I asked the HV what I should do and she said that if I suspect it's on her chest to get her checked out, I did & was given amoxycillin which cleared it up.

It's not with the risk with a baby.

worth not with.

If her breathing is normal (but noisy) then it's not urgent.

But if she appears to need to make extra respiratory effort, or breathing becomes odd in any other way, then I'd get her seen straight away.

DS has had lots of chesty coughs over the last few months (has one at moment poor mite) if they go on more than a week I always take him in to see the doctor, because what starts as a viral infection can lead to a bacterial infection on the chest.
He has variously, been sent away as fine - but keep an eye on him; been given antibiotics; given an inhaler to open the airways; given steroids; and given antibiotics+ inhaler+ steroids depending on how ill the doctor judged him to be.
So I wouldn't say there is no point in taking your DD to the doctor. It really depends on how ill she is. Is she still eating ok, seem well in herself otherwise? One of the main dangers is that small children dehydrate very quickly - at one point we were having to syringe feed water to DS, because the coughing had put him right off food, and drink, and he was at risk of dehydration.
So in summary, don't definitely assume there is nothing a doctor can do, even if it is viral, they can help alleviate symptoms.

Why not have a checkup if you are bothered enough to post about it ? I am not being mean but it must be worrying you to start a thread about it.

I ignored DS2 when he was nearly 1 who caught a cold we had. Ignored it for over a week until a woman in a shop said he was rattling , she was concerned and would I get him checked out? Walking home from the shop DS2 could hardly breathe, had blue lips and gasping by the time we were in the car to A&E. Had a few nights at hospital. Wasn't a fun experience.

The chestiness or otherwise of a cough is pretty irrelevent especially at that age, it's how ill they are and whether or not they are struggling to breath (chest drawing in, rapid breathing rate) that is more important.

Quick update: took her to docs this morning, she was hacking away like an old man this morning and I was very worried. They weren't that helpful but said no chest infection, which is good. Thanks all - as always MN suggestions were brilliant :)
