I saw a post from a girl on facebook asking whether the social could help her buy things to do up her home e.g wallpaper and paint. Alot of people commented that she could get some vouchers to use on a certain paint brand and B&Q etc.

AIBU to think this girl should save some money or attempt to get a job for extra luxeries before expecting the social to foot the bill?

I'm moving house next month and the whole house will need decorating. However i am realistic in the fact i won't be able to afford to wallpaper the whole place at once, instead doing a bit at a time as and when i can afford it. My partner earns a moderate income and i'm currently on maternity leave, so money is tighter at the moment, but would never expect someone to pay for something i could manage without like wallpaper.

I completely understand people using the social to buy essential items such as a cooker or fridge, but not non essentials.

YABVVU. Paint and wallpaper is not a luxury! Dear god....

Perhaps she ought to just live in a cardboard box? Hmm

I agree, there are some things I wouldn't buy in Wilkos, their wallpaper wasn't bad though. I also wait for their sale because you can pick up some bargains.

Suze

you also have to realise that benefits are quite complex now thanks to this Gov.
Its not clear cut anymore, and just because a person doesn't want to work and use childcare doesn't make them lazy, whether receiving benefits or not.
There are also people working who receive benefits because not everybody has a well paid job.

I haven't read all recent posts so can't comment on everything and logging off to prepare dinner now. Just wanted to say i did apologise for being naive re not realising the states some houses are in and of course the poster should have some help in getting the house in a liveable condition. I think i've even said it in the original post that i think people should be entitled to recieve help for essentials. And yes i recieve maternity pay so as i've learnt that is mostly funded by the government not all from my employer, so yes i am taking money out the pot. Guess i'm naive starting a thread without the facts, shoot me down if you want but i'm not the first or the last.

Heck, why dont we all club together for a colourful cardboard box for her to sleep in under a bridge?

QuintessentialOldDear · 31/05/2013 17:42

x post

cory · 31/05/2013 17:42

Ours is not a council house. But we still need wallpaper to contain the crumbling plaster in places. Wallpaper is only a luxury if what is underneath is in a good state of repair.

usualsuspect · 31/05/2013 17:44

No, unfortunately you won't be the last to have an ill informed rant about something you know fuck all about.

IneedAsockamnesty · 31/05/2013 17:49

So you still haven't noticed that decorating grants/ vouchers are not a benefit.

They are provided to tenants from funds provided by tenants rent.

expatinscotland · 31/05/2013 18:07

'I think i've even said it in the original post that i think people should be entitled to recieve help for essentials. '

But still see fecking wallpaper as a 'luxury' even though you don't know if her walls are chipping off.

This is right up there with the thread about custard powder and biscuits in food parcels.

QuintessentialOldDear · 31/05/2013 18:10

Landlords have a duty to maintain their houses to a decent standards, whether the landlord is private or the council. It is as simple as taking care of their property.

OxfordBags · 31/05/2013 18:29

You sicken me, Quint. Why should scum like her get a colourful cardboard box? Or somewhere sheltered like a bridge? She should be grateful for some pissy newspapers and the ever-present threat of sexual assault in a shop doorway, the subhuman bitch. People like you are what's wrong with this country.

Arisbottle · 31/05/2013 18:32

Was there really a thread about custard powder and biscuits.

This place is so odd.

Omg people actually see custard powder and biscuits as a luxury those on benefits should haveShock, christ almighty seems like some people need to step down from their ivory towers and see what being on benefits truly entails!!

pumpkinsweetie · 31/05/2013 18:36

'Shouldn't

pumpkinsweetie · 31/05/2013 18:37

What next a debate on whether a person on benefits deserves loo roll or deodrant!

IneedAsockamnesty · 31/05/2013 18:48

But its not a fecking benefit

usualsuspect · 31/05/2013 18:49

Loo roll? They should use bloody newspaper.

usualsuspect · 31/05/2013 18:51

In fact maybe they should use newspaper to paper their walls.

yaimee · 31/05/2013 18:52

Personally I'm fuming that 'out tax' goes towards wallpapering other peoples houses.
Mps second homes for example. They get a fuck of a lot more than £250 and the homes will most likely be in a perfectly reasonable state to begin with, just not to their taste.

usualsuspect · 31/05/2013 18:54

This thread is like the one about people on benefits buying expensive bread Grin

That was one funny thread though.

WilsonFrickett · 31/05/2013 18:56

I think this whole net contributor thing is absolute bollocks tbh. Our household income is six figures (NOT a boast, honest) but I will never be a net contributor. I owe my life and my son's life to the NHS - how could I ever consider that debt to be paid back? I'll keep earning and I'll keep contributing and I do it with a smile on my face. And I hope the fb girl enjoys her new wallpaper too.

mrsjay · 31/05/2013 19:00

you are not naive you are bitter and pissed off at some random woman , that isn't naivety that is just spouting rubbish
