At what age is it unreasonable to use the parent and child spaces on a car park?

Just that really.

Saw a woman with a young teen (about 14 years old) use a parent and child space at Tesco yesterday.

Also saw a family with a baby using a normal space, although they could have used the parent and child spaces as there were some available.

So just wondering.

Needles my dad does that with me! Only when the car parks empty. I am also 21, but I am his child as he saysWink

I suspect they can fine you, it's private property.

If you have a drive with your house, that's also private property.

How would you go about fining someone who parked on your drive without your permission?

P&PFB spaces are fair game for anyone who would like to park in a wider space (who wouldn't?) and therefore it's a free-for-all.

Supermarkets can stick their parking 'fines' up their arses.

HTH.

It was my understanding the only reason they were created was for the extra room required for negotiating a pram/car seat, etc. If you don't have a pram, park in a normal space.

That being said, a mate of mine was home with his parents this weekend, and that was the only spot available. When questioned about it by a parking warden, they clarified that they were, in fact, parents and child, so had a right to park there, and the warden couldn't argue with it. He's 31.

My mum used the Tesco ones with me when I was 25!

In our defense, I had my leg in plaster and was on crutches at the time and they were the closest ones to the entrance! I had to use a Tesco wheelchair too. I was a bit embarrassed.

I still can't be trusted to open a car door without it hitting the car next to us. I should get a special dispensation. Sad

groupie43 · 02/06/2013 19:18

i have and will continue to park in these spaces even when i am on my own, i am a mother and i have a child and nowhere does it say you have to have them with you to park ,,piece of absolute nonsense,

Past buggy age around four

I went to Tescos with DS today and parked in a P&C space.

The P&C sign said (paraphrasing here as can't remember the exact words) that the P&C spaces are parents with children who are 5 and under as they have extra space for pushchairs.

Although I just lifted DS out of his car seat and stuck him in the toddler seat on a big trolley, as trying to push DS in a buggy and a trolley around a crowded supermarket by myself sounds like a recipe for disaster......

Redbindy · 02/06/2013 19:34

I only use them when the disabled bays are full.

CocacolaMum · 02/06/2013 19:47

I use them. With or without kids in the car. I think they are utter nonsense and was actually a bit pissed off when after shopping at ALDI for years and not having any P&C spaces in the car park at all they decided to keep their 2 disabled spaces and then make a dozen spaces P&C ones. Utter shit and an insult to the average parents intelligence and ability imo.

zlist · 02/06/2013 20:06

I stopped using them when DS just turned 4. I think. Certainly before he started going to school age 4 yr 2 mths.

I do remember a dad looking at my for justification when he 'shouted out' a couple of young women for parking in one when his 'child' was at least 12 at the time. I thought it was rather bizarre.

IMO parent and child spaces should be much further away from the store. I always thought the point of them was to be wider so you could reach in and fasten a seatbelt rather than be close to the store.

dementedma · 02/06/2013 20:08

I am 49 and I use them when shopping with my 78
Year old mother. Takes her ages to get in and out of the car and so I park wherever makes it easier for her.

TippiShagpile · 02/06/2013 20:09

I stopped using them when my dc were 3/4.

There are always people with younger children/babies around who actually need the extra space to get out of the car.

WafflyVersatile · 02/06/2013 20:36

From the being closer to the store point of view. I suppose it's useful if you're trying to wrangle 2 or 3 kids between parked and 'could move at any second' cars. Also it just makes it easier for store workers to see if people are taking the piss?

I have neither car nor kids so whatevs. My view is similar to on the tube 'please give up this seat for those who find it less easy to stand'. Leave them for the people who really benefit from the courtesy.
