to be perturbed at onesie bashing

I feel like the onesie bashing is out of line for many reasons.

we are encouraged to have freedom of expression over our clothing. If we replace the word onesie with 'shorts' or 'bra-top' then people would say, 'hey, you can't tell women what to wear'

calling anyones choice of clothing 'disgusting' is unacceptable

underwear as outerwear has been going on for yonks.

Are we so bound by the unofficial rules of society that we are afraid to be different? Should we not celebrate differences, even if they are not to our personal taste?

I resent the insinuation that those who wear onesies outside their home are 'lazy' or 'couldn't be bothered' to put 'proper' clothes on.

I have a sneaking suspicion that this is a sideways way of snobby sneering at people who are perceived to be common and I'm not okay with that

They are a babygrow, being worn in public by adults.

I will laugh and think you are a twit and I will enjoy being a judgypants whilst I do it.

nemno · 30/05/2013 18:38

I do not understand the onesie hatred but then the only thing clothes-wise that bothers me is their lack eg muffin tops and bum cracks. People being fully covered is never going to be a problem. Though I'll never wear one.

capercaillie · 30/05/2013 18:45

Yes to freedom of expression.

If adults want to wear something that makes them look like an overgrown baby, then that's up to them.

I reserve the right to laugh at them (with judgey pants). At the campsite this week, there were far too many adults wearing them. The sight of an overweight 50 something year old male wearing one made my eyes hurt.

voucherprocon · 30/05/2013 18:55

They are adult babygrows ffs. If you want to dress like a overgrown baby then do it in your own home and don't make other peoples eyes bleed.

dietstartsmonday · 30/05/2013 18:57

You need them camping though
Is so bloody cold Grin

KatoPotato · 30/05/2013 19:06

They are the modern day equivalent of a 'comedy' tie. How bloody hilarious!

wanderings · 30/05/2013 21:37

Didn't someone once wear a pale blue onesie on national TV, some years ago, about 2006-2007, long before they were "fashionable"?

I stopped wearing my onesie after the sleeve fell in the loo while I was having a wee Sad

I never went outdoors wearing it though.

ChasingDogs · 30/05/2013 22:06

Meh, I do sort of think "hehe, giant baby!" when I see somebody in a onesie, but I am struggling to really give a fuck in any meaningful way.

That said, I'm a metal head and have no problem going out in major goth or cyber punk gear when I'm on a night out/in the mood. I've had all sorts of raised eyebrows directed at everything from my hair to clothes and everything in between. It's not generally a problem, as I'm too full of sympathy that the eyebrow-raiser has reached a certain stage in life where they obviously need an M&S cardigan* Grin

I don't own a onesie yet, but this thread has made me think quite seriously about getting one for when I'm camping. It's bloody cold on the moors. I reckon I'd look quite fetching in a fluffy animal boiler suit!

*To be fair, it could be some kind of louis vuitton (sp?) Mickey Choo (sp?) cardigan and I wouldn't know. All looks the same to me. Confused

IncrediblePhatTheInnkeepersCat · 30/05/2013 22:39

I think I'm also sold on one for camping now too. I don't think my girl guides would give a stuff if I did (probably think it was brilliant!). The hard part now is deciding which animal.

Possibly the owl is most fitting.

ChasingDogs · 30/05/2013 22:46

The owl made me Grin and is definitely appropriate. It should be part of the uniform!

I couldn't see an animal I liked there. They were slightly too sensible. If I'm on my own in a tent in the middle of nowhere I simply must look as ridiculous as possible. Kind of like a giant carp onesie, only even more sublimely ridiculous.

Any suggestions of ridiculous and absurd animal onesies gratefully accepted!

LynetteScavo · 30/05/2013 22:50

I'm waiting for the thread where someone turns up to an interview in a onesie. It will happen sooner or later.

trashcanjunkie · 31/05/2013 00:15

there's some kind of uber spammie build your own onesie website some where. we just need eatenbyzombies to go and cyber sleuth it for us.

They say that it takes months for "fashion trends" to get all the way across the pond to Canada... right now, I am happy about that.

I am not fond of pajama bottoms in public, not sure what I would make of onesies.

BeeMom · 31/05/2013 00:45

Colour me ignorant, but is this what you are all referring to?

MadameDefarge · 31/05/2013 03:11

I dont care what people wear until they inflict it on me.

My time on this planet is very short. why should I have to look at people wearing babygrows in the street.

That would kinda be ok if they looked cool/sexy/elegant/risque...well fair dos! but they don't.

synthetic babygrows on adults?

is this metaphor for broken Britain???

Lazyjaney · 31/05/2013 08:06

Grown up babygros sums them up perfectly. BTW anyone remember Parachute suits, they were around in my teens.

Feelingood · 31/05/2013 08:11

IMO they are sold as lounge/sleepwear and thats where they should stay. They look awful in any other context.

ifancyashandy · 31/05/2013 08:11

I work with someone who wears a onsie in the office.

We laugh openly.

And judge privately to each other

Feelingood · 31/05/2013 08:13

and BTW if you having a little drinky of the old wine or cider, they are so not practical for extra toilet visits.

DuttyWine · 31/05/2013 08:26

I am the poster who wore the onesie to the gp! Anyway just want to say I don't wear it for bed, I wear a nightie as my onesie has a hood!

It looks like a jogging suit that's joined at the middle, it has cuffed ankles, a hood and a zip, with a coat over the top it looked no different to wearing harem or jogging pants!

IncrediblePhatTheInnkeepersCat · 31/05/2013 08:27

Chasingdogs The mental image of a carp onesie made me laugh! I've tried to find one (or even just a generic fish) but come up blank.

I did, however, find a much cuter owl. It has wings and a tail!

I still don't see the difference between a onesie and a hoody and trackies apart from one is in two pieces. Surely you wear underwear underneath and (depending on the weather) shorts/trousers and a t-shirt? I wouldn't sleep in one, then spend the day in it, but useful for the 6am cold and desperate for a cup of tea, but got to get the fire going first issue.

Midlifecrisisarefun · 31/05/2013 08:31

At one time someone walking around a town centre in nightclothes would have required a phone call and being gently led away! Grin
I really couldn't care less what someone wears but I only hope there are lots of photos to make them cringe when they wake up and realise how stupid they look.
girls in onesies, boys waddling, trousers down over their bottoms, along looking like toddlers with wet nappies...yep, they look very silly! [old fart emoticon]
