To HATE the landline?!

Seriously. I hate it. It's such an intrusion. You'll be in the middle of doing something, and off it goes.
It's always somebody selling windows or conducting research, but most of the time it's MIL.
Her record so far is 4 times in the space of half an hour. (Each time I've answered by the way, so not like she's ringing back as no-one's answered!)
The kids go to bed between 7 and 8. She KNOWS it's not a good time to ring, but without fail she'll ring at something like 7.45pm right in the middle of bathtime.
She knows she's not going to get an answer. So shouldn't really moan if no-one answers. Hmm
WIBU to turn the landline off every now and again when we want some peace? (We still have our mobiles turned on, we're not completely uncontactable!)

We get cold callers, but our phone reads out the calling number so you can ignore them. I agree about mobiles being stuck in a handbag, I rarely hear mine if I'm in the house, even if it is out of my bag I am out of earshot of it a lot of the time. Whereas the landline has 3 handsets in different rooms, you only miss it if you are hoovering or at the end of the garden.

All those saying you keep your phone constantly switched off - what if it is someone official ringing re something important eg school, doctor/hospital, police, etc.? Also I heard it is better for your credit rating to give a landline number as then you are apparently seen as more settled/stable and taken more seriously.

I don't always answer the landline right away though. If it is important they will leave a message. You can always register for the Telephone Preference Service and that will stop a lot of spam calls.

Personally I hate companies calling me on my mobile and find that very intrusive. So I don't usually give out my mobile number. Mobiles are for friends/family and emergencies.

Except for DM of course nobody important has our landline number Nadia.

Whoknows DH and I have our mobile phones with us constantly, even when we are on the toilet, in the bath, in bed. It is unthinkable that it could be in my handbag in another room. Surely this is normal?? Smile

I'm really surprised that so many people feel so strongly about a landline. I wouldn't be without one and find people ringing my mobile much more intrusive.

I have a mobile for emergencies and in case school need to contact me during the day but otherwise I don't give my number out and actually I get more spam calls on my mobile than I do at home.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 31/05/2013 13:10

I give very few people my mobile number because I work nights and need the phone by the bed in case the school calls while I sleep. The only people who have the number know I'm likely to be asleep so don't call.

The landline gets all the nuisance calls and anytime I need to give a number, it's the landline. I never answer it though! I just let the answer machine kick inConfused

We do have call preference service but it doesn't stop them all. I would be lost without the landline though, it's like a filter for all the crap calls!

I also hate the landline.. nobody has the number. My parents don't have it. Mobile calls are free (same network) and I don't like everyone knowing if you are in or out... mother would ask why I wasn't in earlier etc. I only have it as it is park of the internet package and I can make free landline calls. I might get rid of it altogether.

Not relevant, sorry, but to the person who said they live in a mobile dead zone - do you ever use Skype phone credit? I've just moved somewhere without good mobile signal and find it really useful to be able to phone people over skype (or have them ring me). It means we don't have to have a landline at all, and if I've not got my computer on, I can't get phone calls, so I don't feel intruded upon.
