To open my birthday card early (for the cheque)?

My birthday in a couple of days. Parents on holiday abroad so sent card early -middle of last week. Pretty sure it will have a cheque in it for my present...
I already have 5 cheques that have been meaning to put in the bank for two weeks...
A pain to get to bank...but planning on going today or tomorrow (whilst doing something else I should have done on Mon ..so can't put it off any longer)
Wouldn't even think about it if I had got the other cheques in earlier...but now its only 3 days early?
AIBU to think I should just open it and bank the cheque (if there is one) with the others?
(BTW I don't think parents would mind...can't ask them until they phone and if I did they would say it was ok even if it wasn't ...)

Don't be so daft. Open the card, bank the cheque. Why are you even asking!

sparkle12mar08 · 30/05/2013 08:36

Just do it. Why is this a question that even needs to be asked? I don't get it?

onadifferentplanet · 30/05/2013 08:36

I would but if they are anything like my father they will have dated it for the actual birthday date so I can't bank it early!

CajaDeLaMemoria · 30/05/2013 08:39

You can bank post dated cheques. As soon as you hand it over its valid and the bank will allow you to cash it.

Although the person who wrote the cheque may well get a telling off for doing it, it's considered very bad practise.

If ever a definition of FWP were needed.............

loofet · 30/05/2013 08:48

To me it's not a problem but I know some people are really really petty with shit like this.

I got a birthday card for DD through the post which came like 2 weeks ago, her bday is this weekend. It says on the envelope 'not to be opened until the day' which made the rebellious me go 'Fuck you for telling DD when she can open it, going to let her do it right now for that' Grin I have ishoooos with being told what to do. I mean she would have opened it on her birthday anyway, just don't dictate to us. Grin

Anyway, you say your parents wouldn't mind so go for it!

unlucky83 · 30/05/2013 09:37

Wow - really thought more people would think it was an unreasonable thing thing to do .... just feel a bit cheeky...

Don't know what 'FWP' means - google says 'Friend with Privileges'
and don't really know what that means either Blush
Maybe I should have bigger things to worry about??? And I do ...I worry too much - maybe because I fret about the small things too much..Smile

FWP is first world problem.

Don't worry OP people like to post this when they think your question is trivial. As if everything on here has to be major.

FWIW I would get the cheque out too. Have a good birthday.

mrsjay · 30/05/2013 09:45

come on you are a big girl now Wink of course it is ok to open it

YourMaNoBraBackOfMyCar · 30/05/2013 09:45

Yeah do it. also how much is it for? :o

bobthebear · 30/05/2013 09:50

Dont cheques take 3 days to clear anyway? Which means you'll be able to withdraw the money on your actual birthday instead of 3 days after it
Grin

mrsjay · 30/05/2013 09:55

see bobthebear has the sensible answer Grin

TinBox · 30/05/2013 09:59

I thought the narrow-lipped "it was their gift and their money, you must genuflect before them and ask their permission crowd would be out in force.

Of course you should go ahead and open it and cash it if you want to. You're not a six year old who just found a present wrapped up in a cupboard!

IncrediblePhatTheInnkeepersCat · 30/05/2013 10:02

YANBU, but as another poster mentioned, it could be post-dated for your actual birthday.

MunchMunch · 30/05/2013 10:09

I would open the card early but would have to think about putting it in the bank, only because the people who would give me a cheque don't have much money so they might work out dates for the money coming out of their account after my birthday rather than before or on the day. I would hate to think I'd made them overdrawn if they didn't have enough money in to cover the cheque until after my birthday.

unlucky83 · 30/05/2013 10:22

Done it Blush - do feel naughty...
From my mum, £40 and she has back dated it ...and I know my dad wouldn't have- DAMN and she has written the date in big letters ...guess a 'joke' to show she does know my actual birthday...(they forgot last year!)

Not sure if I can bank it or not now ...don't want to get her in trouble...

Now I have the guilt of having opening it AND
another reason to fret - can I actually bank it or not?....

Might have to go for a lie down in a darkened room Wink
Damn!

Cosydressinggown · 30/05/2013 10:26

I wouldn't, because I know that opening it ON my birthday would matter to my mum. You know your parents best.

clarinetV2 · 30/05/2013 10:30

Happy birthday! After all this trauma things can only get better.

Iwishitwouldgetwarmer · 30/05/2013 10:53

If she's backdated it more than 6 months I don't think the bank will accept it.

NeedToMoan · 30/05/2013 10:57

Lol I have to confess I did exact same thing this week, only it was cash. I've never done this before but having an exceptionally tight week due to expensive car service. I spent the cash on petrol and a cinema trip for my son so don't feel too guilty.

chickenfactory · 31/05/2013 00:39

Iwish I think OP means post dated it, so it's dated for her birthday in 3days.
Take it to the bank, they will most likely cash it.

HoHoHoNoYouDont · 31/05/2013 00:52

Good point Munch
