dentist's bill for dd 576 - steep for two fillings?

marriedinwhiteagain · 29/05/2013 20:47

DH has taken dd to the dentist - he has paid nearly 100 for a check up and some XRays. DD needs two tiny fillings, in adjacent molars, and four fissure sealants. One one hour appointment and one 45 minute appointment. Oh, and a referral to the hygienist for 56 more when it's been done. He has made the three appointments. DD is 15 and generally we have good teeth so not much precedent to judge by. Private dentist, SW London, but woah!!! Or in MNet speak WTF Shock.

Total: 98+576+56 - 730!!!!!

I go to an expensive SW London private dentist (work insurance pays) but I still think that's Shock WTF.

Wabbitty · 29/05/2013 20:50

Wow. Really makes you appreciate the NHS

KatherineLacey · 29/05/2013 20:52

What. The. Fuck.

I had a check up and a filling for 68 quid - private (not London, but quite expensive city).

The most I've paid for a filling was 90 quid, in west London, by an arrogant and annoying (and minted, presumably) dentist.

DrHolmes · 29/05/2013 20:53

Yep sounds right. My colleague just had a check up, hygenist and a filling and that was 300 quid.

I am NHS have had endless x-rays, a filling and just had root canal...£76!

FatimaLovesBread · 29/05/2013 20:53

Why does she need at total of one hour forty five minutes appointment time for two tiny fillings? I have fillings done in 15-20 minute appointments.
Is there no NHS dentists available?
I didn't even realise people paid for children's dentists

BanjoPlayingTiger · 29/05/2013 20:53

That is ludicrous when you realise that would have been free on the NHS, and even for an adult would only have cost £49 in total.

ComposHat · 29/05/2013 20:53

Blimey, feel slightly better about the £230 bill for my Shane McGowan esque horror fangs.

HollyBerryBush · 29/05/2013 20:54

Private dentist, SW London, but woah!!!

Well if you go private, then your health plan should cover it, or your works insurance.

Virgil · 29/05/2013 20:55

DS1 had two teeth extracted under general privately. Cost over a thousand pounds!

UK health insurance doesn't cover it.

DD is v nervous and after a mmajor cock up at the local NHS dentist I sent the DC to DH's. Usually it's a check-up and trip to the hygienist although she had a tiny bit of cosmetic veneering a couple of years ago but relatively that was cheap.

I am terrified of the dentist and don't go - not for 10 years anyway.

if they are private dentist then you pay private prices. It is only free on the nhs. You cant force a private dentist to use nhs funding.

Scholes34 · 29/05/2013 21:05

£400 for two fillings at a private dentist not in London. Work insurance doesn't cover it all. However, the 3 DC are free . . . but teeth are good, so no work needed.

I'm looking for a new NHS dentist.

Tiredsparrow · 29/05/2013 21:05

The £98 and £56 sound spot on, for good dental advice and care that's below average.

The other amount id wonder about and sounds ever so slightly high. they have perhaps charged for adult prices and not a child/ teenage price?

I've worked for both nhs and private dental practices and the prices do differ massively but so does the care and treatment

musu · 29/05/2013 21:05

Ds goes to a private dentist but his treatment is covered on the NHS. I pay but I wouldn't expect to pay that amount for two small fillings.

HollyBerryBush · 29/05/2013 21:08

Dental insurance - Dentuplan, BUPA, Dencover - lots of dental insurance providers in the UK..

TBH, I have little sympathy for you paying for something that is bookable and free.

I just spent an hour this afternoon with DS2, having a filling, and a polish and it was free - that's what I pay my taxes for.

Yesterday I spent another hour with DS3, having his tooth capped - and it was free.

And I got two lots of prescription toothpaste Grin

I love my dentist. My dentist therapeutic. I book appointments for me when I don't even need them! But I have to pay Sad

Another vote for the NHS - where we live we are fortunate enough to have plenty of NHS dentists which I know not all areas are so lucky with. But I do feel some people feel they should pay for their kids to go private anyway which I personally think is crazy. Our NHS dentist is great - our younger son will shortly need some extractions and a brace due to overcrowding. It will cost us nothing and I feel confident that the orthodentist he is getting referred to will be professional and do a great job - I have friends children who have already been through the same process there. I can see absolutely no reason to part with our hard earned cash unnecessarily.

marriedinwhiteagain · 29/05/2013 21:11

I don't think I was asking for sympathy hollyberrybush

Oh were you just stealth bragging you paid so much?

My apologies for misunderstanding

StatisticallyChallenged · 29/05/2013 21:18

I think that is too high - I go to a pretty pricey private dentist who specialises in people with phobias and my previous fillings were no where near that cost.

Viviennemary · 29/05/2013 21:18

I'm surprised you didn't get a quote for the work done beforehand. I thought this was usual in dentistry. My dentist does private and NHS work and always gives a quote. It does seem on the steep side.

mamageekchic · 29/05/2013 21:19

Wow! Steep! I'm registered as NHS but pay for fillings privately so I can have tooth coloured ones, £85 each. No idea why it takes so long either I had 2 old metal ones replaced recently in 20mins.

podgymumma · 29/05/2013 21:22

Two fillings and veneer work already - how old is she?
