To think ASOS are being unreasonable

I saw a skirt in Sunday Times Style magazine recently, which led me to discover Asos. Fabulous site/clothes. I went to set up an account and to pay with pay pal.
We are currently renting so my delivery address is different from my banking/billing address. No big deal I assume. PayPal have never minded before Grin
Asos, on the other hand, want me to 'just scan' my passport or driving licence and a copy of a recent credit card statement and send these to them via jpeg or gif.
Technically I cannot do this, I simply don't know how. I also hear banks warnings that they never seek personal information. It sounds like a scam, but it came up again at the next order.
I have replied to them that I am unwilling and unable to comply but they just resend the same message in reply.

Does this sound like a scam to you?
What would you do?
If they hadn't such fab clothes I'd forget it. Some MN wisdom needed please.

That doesn't sound right at all.

I've shopped with ASOS for years. Neither Paypal nor my bank address are the same as my actual address, because it's a hassle to change it.

They've never asked for information before...

I'd email [email protected]. Unless of course the trouble is that this is your first order and the details don't match...hmm. I'd still email them, and make it clear that you don't have a scanner and cannot send that information, and that you wish to use Paypal to pay.

NewAtThisMalarky · 29/05/2013 15:28

I don't see snything wrong with them protecting themselves against potential fraud.

Maybe you could get a friend to order for you?

IamMrsElf · 29/05/2013 15:28

I have used Asos and have never been asked for this kind of info. Their stuff is great but not worth risking your personal info over. Is there a contact number?

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 29/05/2013 15:29

Try contacting them via Facebook or Twitter.

StatisticallyChallenged · 29/05/2013 15:30

I think it's usual to have problems when the first order you place doesn't match the billing address. It's triggering a fraud prevention system by the sounds of things as mismatched addresses can be an indicator of stolen/cloned/whatever card details.

I presume your Paypal account existed before you moved house?

Either change your billing address to where you actually live or get the first order delivered to the billing address (I'm assuming this is somewhere like your parents house?)

Once you have placed an order you can add alternative delivery addresses

Brilliant - in less than 5 mins!!

I'll put in an order to my billing address and feed back. Glad to hear people like the stuff. I can't tell the quality from the pics.

Its getting more common to only deliver to billing address to protect against fraud. A lot of places will only deliver to confirmed addresses and having been a victim of fraud I was very annoyed with the retailer who sent elsewhere. My sister was nearly a victim from another retailer but they decided to double check.

NadiaWadia · 29/05/2013 15:41

I don't know that the quality is brilliant, to be honest.

DD orders a fair bit from there, and yes there is some nice stuff, but it is a bit pot luck. I mean, things often arrive and are cheaper and nastier looking than you can tell from the photos.

Also there are the famous ASOS zips. Don't know why but seems a lot of suppliers to ASOS use some special kind of cheap zip that won't work, or will for a while and then gets stuck or broken. She has had to send a lot of stuff back because of this.

lisbethsopposite · 29/05/2013 15:45

I've put in an order for this blouse www.asos.com/Lavish-Alice/Lavish-Alice-Blouse-With-Crop-Sleeve/Prod/pgeproduct.aspx?iid=2970937&cid=17345&sh=0&pge=0&pgesize=20&sort=-1&clr=White- I'll see what happens.

See what I mean, technically challenged?
The shoes from Cheap Monday look great too but not there in my size.

If it is legit and you don't have a scanner you can take a picture of the relevant documentation with your phone instead.

StatisticallyChallenged · 29/05/2013 15:56

I think the quality is hit and miss - some stuff great, some not so but given free delivery and free returns I don't generally mind too much.

SuburbanRhonda · 29/05/2013 16:28

My DD loves ASOS but they're getting some bad publicity at the moment due to some radioactive belts they've sold and, more importantly, their unreasonable treatment of the person they claim supplied them:

lisbethsopposite · 29/05/2013 16:40

Message came back - order cancelled!!

OP posts:
StatisticallyChallenged · 29/05/2013 16:53

That's odd - unless the account has been flagged for some reason. Did they give you an explanation?

mysteryfairy · 29/05/2013 20:36

I have ordered stuff for my nieces direct to their address from Asos so I'd say they definitely have some info about you or your rented address that is concerning them. Can you check what the credit reference agencies have recorded for you. Obviously Asos doesn't matter in itself but a bit worrying if the same info might impact on something more important in future!

roofio87 · 29/05/2013 21:17

funnily enough I've had problems with asos today because they sent a replacement item to a random old address I had on my account, but not my billing address or current delivery address!! eventually got them to admit it was there problem after they asked me if I could try and retrieve the parcel....err I've not lived there for 5 years and now live 300 miles away. my delivery and billing addresses being different obviously didn't bother them in this case!!

Naysa · 29/05/2013 21:26

I work for the delivery company that ASOS use, personally I'd avoid them. They are well aware of our policies yet they continually misinform people and customers get bounced between us and them.

lisbethsopposite · 29/05/2013 21:31

I've put a message on their FB page. Thanks oldlady

Thanks for the tips - something alerted Asos, whatever it was. They are not for turning. They want copies of my passport and a past CC bill to open an account.

Shopping is a bit impulse and I feel a bit Bolshy about it. They add insult to injury by LYING - it is to protect ME (Tee hee hee). I'm a bit thick but then I copped that they actually want to protect themselves. Of course I will not be paying for goods I don't recieve, but they could post to a fraudulent address, and I'm sure they have before. They are entitled to protect themselves from fraud but I'd prefer if they were more honest about it.

If I see something else nice on there I might give in but while postage is free to Eire, returns are not, and I've had mixed success with on-line shopping.
