To think DH should know what barbecue to get

Trying2bMindful · 29/05/2013 00:27

We have a barbecue party this weekend and I thought DH was sorting out a barbecue... Well he hasn't and doesn't seem to know which gas barbecue we should get.

Surely this is a "blue job" and he should have a view on it?!
Grrrr.
So, over to you mumsnetters - which gas barbecue should I buy tomorrow on my day off?!

I also recommend a Weber, had one years and still looks like new, also cooks food to perfection every time. (plus I picked it out all by myself)

Urban dictionary states,

Blue Job: An unsatisfactory blow job that bums you out. Very rare and commonly involves the overuse of teeth.
or
It's when she / he has a face like a glazed doughnut.
A blue Job describes what's after a blowjob

DeskPlanner · 29/05/2013 09:00

Grin at BBQ's being operated by the cock.

Is the opposite of blue job, pink job ? And does it involve washing and cleaning ? Smile

WandaDoff · 29/05/2013 09:05

Are you new OP?

Trying2bMindful · 29/05/2013 10:10

Ha ha ha!! No I'm not new but it was late & I totally forgot MN get v upset by blue n pink jobs.
In our house DH chooses to have an opinion on outdoorsy things. & there is something very caveman about men at a bar b w all gathering around the fire... Whether it is gas or charcoal.
What annoys me this time is he actually doesn't know which one despite making lots of noise last time I asked him. It is also gives me the irrits as he knows we are having a bar b q party on Sunday so he should have an opinion at this late stage or we will have no bar b q!!!
I'd like gas for convenience because we just won't use charcoal v often. A gas barbie by the back door will get used so much more, well in my mind at least!!.
What Size is a good question though. Usually just for the 3 of us but we do regularly have friends round so could easily be used for 6 or 8 people...
Will see what B&Q have later.

Btw I love "totes"! However i Am far too old to use the phrase as it ranks along with "awesome".... A young person's phrase. (Although i did hear an old lady in whistler use "awesome" - I was gob smacked at the time & got the giggles!!)

YABU. How would you feel if he said housework was a pink job

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 29/05/2013 16:49

Of course YANBU!!

He should know which BBQ to buy and you should know what hoover/iron/cooker is the best Confused

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 29/05/2013 16:49

...and totes is almost as bad as the work "ikkles"...........almost but not quite :)

haggisaggis · 29/05/2013 16:56

If you can afford it, definitely a weber. WE have had a couple of cheaper ones and always ended up getting shot of them as they weren't very sturdy. WE have a Weber beside our back door and I use it year round (North East Scotland - you either barbecue when it's cold & raining or not at all!)

StuntGirl · 29/05/2013 18:35

It's clearly not a 'blue job' or else he'd give a shit. Which he doesn't. So buy whichever one you want.

SpanishFly · 29/05/2013 18:55

Op you are right re gas - we had a charcoal one for years but it rarely got used cos of the waiting time till it was hot, the cleaning etc etc. We invested in a gas one, and it's used all the time.

And to the poster who said it's like an outdoor oven, um no it's not, unless your oven flame-grills your food Hmm

And fwiw charcoaled food isn't particularly good for you.

After laughing at the blue issue........
I think its a bit late to be thinking about this.
Dh, his best friend and brother are BBQ kings. They would investigate investigate, google, go to BBQ shop etc, eBay.
And then have atleast 2 trial runs of sausages, burgers, and then atleast a pork loin, ribs from butcher, before inviting anyone round.
I am guessing this is no longer an option for you ha ha. Oh dear.
What's your budget?
Best of luck!!

BumpingFuglies · 29/05/2013 19:38

I think you should ask MNHQ to move this thread to FWR. I could do with a laugh and you would get some flames for your barbecue Grin

crashdoll · 29/05/2013 19:41

I've never heard of blue jobs and pink jobs. It doesn't make me "upset" but it does sound very twatty. Grin

Hanginggardenofboobylon · 29/05/2013 19:44

Buy an Outback gas BBQ, had ours years and it is fab.

Trying2bMindful · 29/05/2013 21:40

Unfortunately DH does believe certain jobs are "pink" ones and tbh as I am better at them I do take care of those most of the time, just like he takes care of the blue jobs most of the time because he is better at them.
& to the poster who commented re knowing which cooker/iron/Hoover to get being a pink job - GrinGrinGrin. If I was getting a new kitchen and about to have a party I would know which oven I wanted well ahead of schedule and definitely in time for a few practice runs. Amusingly it is DH in our family who has an opinion on hoovers & irons. I couldn't give a toss because I don't use them!!!
So yes the pink n blue jobs in our household do not get split down completely traditional lines.

As for barbecues - who knew there was so much choice, that one could spend so much and that there are online forums for discussing using said equipment and where one can post photos of one's barbecue events!? It is a whole new world.... One day I would like a large Big Green Egg but I will need to be very rich to get it. Sounds amazing.
In the meantime DH says a Weber is far too expensive but wants to spend £250 on a gas Outback. However the ones in Homebase don't have the lava rocks so he is going to try to order it online so fingers crossed for delivery on Saturday. I don't even know what a lava rock is or why they are better than having something else. Just as well I didn't pick up a barbecue in B&Q earlier as he would have returned it for being the wrong thing!!

Thanks Hanging. Yes I think the Outback looks like the best of the bunch. Good to hear a positive review from you though. Everyone we know is telling us to get a Weber. They must be much better off or have a cheaper source. £500 on a piece of garden equipment which will get used less often than the kitchen oven which didn't cost that much!!?

^This.

Hanginggardenofboobylon · 29/05/2013 21:51

We have the Trooper. Had it 8 years.

When you go to buy the gas make sure you know which type of gas and the type of connection - saves multiple trips to garden centre < voice of experience>

deste · 29/05/2013 21:59

You do realise when you by a BBQ that it has to be made up as it usually comes in bits.

Yabu to have a BBQ this weekend. Get a stew on instead. Brrrrrrrr

pointythings · 29/05/2013 22:06

Gas BBQs are a waste of time, might as well just use the cooker. For charcoal it's Weber all the way, DH and I got our first in 1997 and it lasted for 15 years. Bear in mind we are the family who BBQd our steak on the 2nd of January once because it seemed criminal to treat our incredible fillet steak to any other means of cooking Grin. Webers are worth every penny of what they cost, they just last and last. Our current one sits outside with a cover on, we use it if the weather is even vaguely plausible and the food tastes so much better done on charcoal.

Having said all that it is DH who does the BBQ arson stuff, but that's just because he has the skills (he's American). I do all IT and car stuff though, so no pink and blue jobs in this house.

SpanishFly · 29/05/2013 22:15

As I said before, unless your cooker/oven flame grills, then it's nothing like cooking on a gas bbq

JamieandtheMagicTorch · 29/05/2013 22:18

There is nothing cave man about a gas barbecue
