To not get the fuss with covent garden

Fairyloo · 27/05/2013 19:21

Every time I go to london people tell me go to covent garden "it's amazing". I always go and feel a bit let down. It's high st shops and millions of miserable street performers.

I like the inside market bin but so overpriced.

I do love south bank.

Am I missing something with covent garden??

I like covent garden.

I hate all the tourists. They give me The Rage.

YoniWheretheSunDontShine · 27/05/2013 22:01

Oh dear, again, the " I hate London because all London is - is Oxford Street and Covent Garden" - not you op, but others.

London is a series of villages, all unique. Its diverse, beautiful, and so interesting. CG could be loads better if it had more of a continental square feel to it...with more cafe seating outside....all round the edge.

WafflyVersatile · 27/05/2013 22:03

other people ruin everything. Angry

Yawn4theday · 27/05/2013 22:07

Need to google secret London see what comes up.

The City of London is an area often overlooked by tourists. Postman's park near St Paul's is a real treasure.

Geordieminx · 27/05/2013 22:11

Ds loved Dianna park. Shane we to to get to Heathrow for 4pm flight else we would have stayed all day.

Would love to do Borough market but not sure how popular that would be with 6yo dsWink South bank was lovely but very busy, be nice to go back and just wander.

We did the duck tour on Monday... It was ££ but fab

meglet · 27/05/2013 22:11

While we're on the subject of the best places in London this should be a link to the petition to get them to stop the plans to redevelop the Southbank Skatepark Sad.

The dc's love watching the skaters + BMX's, and the owners want to slap a few more shops on there Angry.

YoniWheretheSunDontShine · 27/05/2013 22:12

Just looked up postman's park, a small tear is welling.

FreudiansSlipper · 27/05/2013 22:13

Where is this windmill in Brixton ? I live up the road in dulwich and not seen or heard of any windmill

Brixton village is great for food

I love where I love so much going on great community feel I never want to move

WafflyVersatile · 27/05/2013 22:13

Yeah, I think I signed that a few weeks back.

This govt (and the councils) know the cost of everything and the value of nothing.

meglet The bead shop was amazing - c.1991-1993 was when I went.

London is fantastic and I take it for granted

FreudiansSlipper · 27/05/2013 22:25

thank you both

how did miss that drive past there often read all the what is going on in the area magazines shall go and have a look

there is always something that you have not seen to go and explore in London

I would recommend a history walk around the city of London it is fascinating the amount of history in such a small area I went years ago going to go again one of those things that on my should do

HollyBerryBush · 27/05/2013 22:25

I like Greenwich, but it's a tourist trap sadly. I only go in winter when there aren't that many cluttering up the streets. Love the market, but only for mooching, far too inflated prices for bric-a-brac

But I really love Southwark, or suvvark as we'd say! Once you get off the beaten track, down the borough, or even down Tooley Street, mind you the Mayors testicle Parlour is there so it's a bit more on the track these days, I remember when all the rail way arches were pubs Grin and Hays Galleria was in its infancy.

So many good pubs in, brilliant one, right down the Borough, called the Mermaid, ooh the fish lunches we used to have.

Things like Vinopolis ruin it. Fantastic pizza parlour in Southwark Cathederal, and if it's your thing, there is always a lunchtime musical.

I also don't think you can beat St Martin in the Fields up on T/Sq either.

I think I could do you every pub in The City too Blush

is well old

Picturesinthefirelight · 27/05/2013 22:33

We love it but mostly because of all the dance shops for dd. we also like looking round the ROH shop and the toy theatre shop. Then it used to be a shirt walk up to Dress circle :(.

GetOrfMoiLand · 27/05/2013 22:36

I also love Southwark and the city.

squoosh · 27/05/2013 22:37

How exactly do you pronounce Southwark?

Is it Suthurk?

WafflyVersatile · 27/05/2013 22:39

I should probably do a city of london tour. I'm not very well-disposed towards the area but there must be some fantastic history. Enough to fill a dozen guided walks.

FreudiansSlipper · 27/05/2013 22:39

Yes not south work

GetOrfMoiLand · 27/05/2013 22:39

I pronounce it Suthark (soft th iykwim)

GetOrfMoiLand · 27/05/2013 22:40

Yes not like in Dallas Grin

YoniWheretheSunDontShine · 27/05/2013 22:40

Oh yes the view of CG at xmas or summer from the terrace of the ROH is lovely, standing there with a glass of wine, hearing the hum below.

Hampstead, wonderful, kenwood house, Spaniards Inn, High Gate, Primrose Hill Regents Park, Battersea Park and zoo, London zoo, Notting Hill, LOVE spittlefields....

MadBusLady · 27/05/2013 22:40

+1 here for the city, it's a strangely atmospheric place full of tiny alleys and medieval churches next to corporate sheer glass walls (everything's closed on the weekend though). Then go to the Museum of London, which is fantastic. Just west of the city on Fleet Street is a pub called Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese I used to drink in when I worked round there, and it has a great sign over the door saying "Rebuilt 1667" (and it looks it).

I always think tourists have a very rough deal in London, it's so big and the tourist trail involves a lot of slightly frenetic/underwhelming places (Oxford Street, Covent Garden etc). Plus a lot of people don't adjust to how good the transport is so they don't really get around, except on the tube between the major hotspots. I love living here but I wouldn't want to be a visitor.

HollyBerryBush · 27/05/2013 22:42

Properly pronounced ? Suh'th'aa'ck

South London pronunciation: Suvverk, innit?

WafflyVersatile · 27/05/2013 22:45

Holland park is much under-rated I think. Gosh I never go up that way either these days. Lovely Japanese garden.

I'm frightfully lazy and tend to stay local.

As someone said upthread. London is really a series of towns and villages joined with urban sprawl. common themes running through them all but all unique.

You'd be surprised what little time born londoners spend in zone 1 if it's not for work.

When one first moves to london one's social life is all about soho and covent garden etc then you realise there are perfectly good pubs and clubs and restaurants and parks closer to home.
