I think I just fainted, or something.

I was sitting on the sofa, DP was leaving for work. I stood up on the sofa to give DP a kiss and cuddle, think he lifted me off the sofa in the hug then must have lowered me down to the floor (he's a foot taller). I remember him saying "keep your face off my work jacket or your face will get dirty" then the next thing I know I'm sitting on the floor with my head sort of at his knees with a throbbing headache and a feeling of total confusion as to what was happening then started to cry Sad

DP says I just slid to the floor in very slow motion, not like a quick collapse.

I feel completely fine now, just a bit of a headache. I had eaten lunch so it's not lack of food. Was it just extreme headrush maybe? I do get that sometimes when I stand up too quickly.

Ask the chemist for whatever generic one they have that combines vitamin C. You can't absorb iron without vitamin c so taking iron only tablets without making sure you're taking vitamin c (in food or tablet form) too is a bit pointless.

ExcuseTypos · 27/05/2013 22:02

If you have anaemia you really need a prescription from your dr. You need a blood test.

The concentration of iron in the tablets sold over the counter is tiny compared to the ones you will need if you have anaemia.

I was anaemic, and it made me feel very tired, faint and generally fed up. I was having a nap almost every afternoon. I would phone your dr say you want a check up.

Manchesterhistorygirl · 27/05/2013 22:05

Definitely avoid iron tablets, spatone is much better. You can get it from your chemist.

I also have low blood pressure and sometimes feel very faint. I get classic symptoms as a novelist would describe them. Tunnel vision and a rushing sound. I know now to sit down or lean over something, fast, before I go over.

BeingAWifeIsNotForMe · 27/05/2013 22:15

Op random question, you say you are pale, are you a red head?

I also have very low blood pressure and pernicious anemia, at a recent check up gp was talking about a link between the ginger gene and low blood pressure (not put quite that simply Grin )

ExcuseTypos · 27/05/2013 22:23

Manchester, if you are very anaemic , Spatone will not make you better. You need proper iron tablets from the dr, to be taken with some orange justice for vit C.

MeerkatMerkin · 27/05/2013 22:36

BeingAWife that's interesting! I am not a redhead (very dark haired and olive-skinned) but whilst I was pg with DS I discovered I had very low blood pressure and anaemia. Still have low blood pressure although apparently not anaemia (checked again whilst pg although had a mc). Anyway, point is, DS is ginger - funny to think I could have the 'ginger gene' and my blood pressure/iron levels is indicative of that! Grin

Sorry OP that was a purely self-absorbed observation. FWIW, I have had the lightheaded feeling from getting up too quickly and I feel like I could possibly faint (vision goes white and spotty) but I'm quite sturdy and always manage to level myself by sitting down or holding onto a bit of furniture/wall - I think it's fairly common for that to happen but I would visit GP to check your blood pressure/iron anyway, if you're worried.

Somethingtothinkabout · 27/05/2013 22:38

I have fair hair but I'm definitely as pale as a red head, as in can't-get-make-up-light-enough type pale. Now I'm thinking my pale skin may be down to this too, partly?

Hate the idea of a blood test, never had one before and I'm squeemish. Think I'm going to need to get one though. Dammit! I'll probably faint

Don't take iron tablets unless you are actually anaemic as if not they give you dreadful constipation.

A headache if the fainting was dehydration linked would be quite usual,I'm no doctor but apparently dehydration is the cause of most headaches at least it is according to my mother who is also not a doctor but quite fancies herself as one.

headlesslambrini · 27/05/2013 22:58

I used to get this a lot when I was younger. Low blood pressure was my cause. I don't add salt to my diet ans was told to increase my salt intake to raise my blood pressure. I do it about once a week, not necessarily adding salt, just eating something salty, fish, Gammon, crisps

bottleofbeer · 28/05/2013 00:54

I'm a regular blood donor but twice in the last year I've been knocked back because my HB was too low for them to take it. The other time it was only just high enough, literally on the borderline.

I've had four kids by section and my HB has never been low; unfortunately my period is always around the same time as my donor session which can't help.

I've been lethargic, fed up and sleeping all the time for months. I always make the effort to donate blood and have never missed a session (even if I've been sent away with low HB) but sadly I think I'm going to have to accept that donating every four months is leaving me low on iron and I might have to do it once every eight months instead. As much as donating is important to me, if it's going to leave me feeling generally wiped out then I just simply can't do it as often as I do.

Op, get some of This

My mum is really anaemic and takes its, its good and its cheap.

BoreOfWhabylon · 28/05/2013 01:53

Sounds like a faint but, as others have said, the headache is not typical. Important that you see GP, even if you feel fine.

Don't be taking anything until you find out if it is needed.

Bogeyface · 28/05/2013 02:36

I used to faint a lot and got banging headaches for about a minute or so after I came around. It hasnt happened for years now (10+).

vole3 · 28/05/2013 06:08

Try Spatone iron supplement water in a glass of orange juice. You can buy it in Boots. Kinder on the gut than tablets.
