To think she should know my order by now?

(This is sort of lighthearted. I'm not actually bent out of shape over it.)

Every morning (well, about four out of five weekday mornings) I go to my local Greg's and I order the exact same thing. I smile and I say:

"Good morning! I'd like a bacon roll with a little bit of brown sauce, a chocolate eclaire, and a white coffee with three sugars, please."

Most mornings, the same woman takes my order and, even though I've probably said these words to her two dozen times over the past few weeks, she always looks at me as if she's never seen me before, and she has to ask at least once while preparing my order a question like, "Do you want sausage?" or "Do you want brown sauce?" or "How many sugars?"

There's another woman who works there who does seem to remember me, even though she rarely takes my order. She also offered me a loyalty/reward card thing where you get stamps for a free coffee, because she recognized that I'm a daily regular. I must have been in there a dozen times (served by the forgetful woman) before I even knew they existed.

Is the forgetful woman winding me up? Or am I just deluded to think that someone should remember me (the really tall American who has the exact same thing every morning)?

Also, if Greg's is on your Bingo card, you're welcome. I'll try to come back and drip feed something about parking in here, later.

Ta!

I think all customers are special, and should be made to feel as such.

Greggs is a huge bakery chain. It's not a restaurant, a hotel or a holiday resort where one might expect to be made to feel special.

I don't need to feel 'special'. I just need my shit in pastry so I can bugger off back to the street.

Actually, it pisses me off when people are false and have been told to make the customers feel 'special'. It's a load of shit and plenty of people don't like the falseness.

Just politeness, speedy service and even a smile (if they feel like giving a proper one) that's all I want with my sausage roll.

justmuddlingalong · 24/05/2013 13:23

I agree WorraLiberty. It's takeaway fast food served in a grease soaked bag and a cardboard cup, not haute cuisine.

KatyTheCleaningLady · 24/05/2013 13:30

I don't think it's asking a lot to be friendly and show appreciation for customers.

I don't think being able to remember every regulars order is necessary to make customers feel good, but being friendly and is. Don't have to have long chats, although the non chatty customers are obviously not in the mood for chat. But, a smile and an attitude that shows appreciation is important.

This lady isn't unfriendly. She's nice enough. But others in the same store have made me feel more appreciate. Especially the one who thought to give me a loyalty card.

I only get irritated if they are downright sullen. If they don't respond to my smile and friendly tone, then I don't go back and I tell everyone how miserable that place is

I've noticed that there's always a general consensus on miserable places. It's not just me.

YABU but only because I now want a Greggs and have to walk past one shortly......their custard caramel doughnuts are amazing.

It is surely quicker for the server to ask "usual love?" rather than the questions? Maybe she is secretly hoping that one day you have given up sugar and cakes? (bacon sandwiches are not that bad really).

forevergreek · 24/05/2013 14:47

I couldn't eat that for breakfast every day!

I'm also slim, good weight etc and wouldn't worry about the calories, but I would worry what it's doing inside to my arteries/ organs/ sugar levels! 3 sugars in tea must taste like mountain dew..

Many people have physical jobs/ day ( myself and dh included), but v few need sugar to that degree.

Maybe the greggs lady is hoping you will ask for something else one day to prevent early diabetes. ( Iv not been in greggs do not sure what they sell )

KatyTheCleaningLady · 24/05/2013 15:13

It's a large cup of coffee. Bigger than an actual china cup. It's not that sweet.

Sugar isn't harmful. If you are physically active, you just burn it away.

Fat isn't harmful, either.

The chemicals in the bacon are really the only thing dubious.

I'm very tall, very active, and it's not problematic to eat a breakfast like that.

If I had something like porridge, fruit and skim milk, I would be starving in an hour.

Sirzy · 24/05/2013 15:26

I never thought I would see someone trying to justify an eclair as a better breakfast option than porridge!

KatyTheCleaningLady · 24/05/2013 15:50

Of course it is. Wink Porridge doesn't fill me up. I just feel hungry again right away. There I'd be, scrubbing skirting boards, all lightheaded. Sad

I'm pretty surprised at all the pearl clutching over my breakfast. It sticks to my ribs, and gives me energy.

When I'm home, I can graze on stuff, so porridge would be fine. But not when I'm working.

I hate when people in shops/pubs/restaurants expect me to order the same thing I've ordered the last twenty times in a row, what if I want something different? The presumption annoys me.

Service staff can't make everybody happy, we all have different wants. If she doesn't recognise you then she probably has a bad memory. She's serving dozens of strangers in the same hour she's serving you and seeing many more throughout the day, you're not going to be as memorable as you think you areGrin

thezebrawearspurple · 24/05/2013 16:07

Btw I'd love to be able to eat your breakfast everyday and not get fat!!!

StuntGirl · 24/05/2013 16:13

I'm still flabbergasted at someone expecting super special sevice from Greggs. Greggs. It's cheap shit served by minimum wage staff. Seriously. Buy your sausage roll and move on!

usualsuspect · 24/05/2013 16:14

YABU and I work in a cafe and do remember regular customers orders.

But I wouldn't call you a regular after only a dozen or so times.

usualsuspect · 24/05/2013 16:15

Minimum wage staff deserve the same respect as anyone else.

Trill · 24/05/2013 16:15

Those little sachets of sugar are about 3g, and a proper teaspoon's worth is more like 5g. So really 2 sachets of sugar is only a heaped teaspoon.

KurriKurri · 24/05/2013 16:20

Maybe its company policy to try to flog a sausage to anyone who orders a bacon sarnie - like they always say 'Gigantissimo?' at you when you order a coffee in Starbucks/Costa/ Cafe Nerd whatever.

usualsuspect · 24/05/2013 16:22

Maybe she just doesn't think you are special enough.

JackieTheFart · 24/05/2013 16:27

Who cares about what OP is ordering, it's not relevant to her question! Although I am totally jealous

YABU. Greggs are not allowed to be friendly Grin

JackieTheFart · 24/05/2013 16:27

Cafe Nerd lol!

KatyTheCleaningLady · 24/05/2013 16:28

Super special? I don't think being friendly and appreciative is super special. I also don't think having a great memory is required to give good service. The lady is nice and gets what I need.

I don't think, though, that it's any harder to give friendly, personal service than it is to be sullen and do only the bare minimum. In fact, I would find it more difficult and emotionally draining. But, anything short of actual misery and utter ineptitude, I don't much care. Dullards gotta eat, too.

That said, when I am made to feel good about the transaction, I will be a loyal customer who will do things like tweet about it and tell anyone who will listen how great it is.

OP posts:
usualsuspect · 24/05/2013 16:37

Some customers get annoyed if I do remember their regular orders.

We can't win really.

ipswitch · 24/05/2013 16:38

Maybe she disaproves of your breakfast choices and purposefully asks every day in case you have changed your mind.

usualsuspect · 24/05/2013 16:39

TBH she sounds to me like she is giving you good service by asking you what you want.

melika · 24/05/2013 16:46

3 sugars!!!

KatyTheCleaningLady · 24/05/2013 16:53

I know she means we'll.

I would never say anything to her in complaint. She's fairly nice, with a friendly manner.

But, I really can't imagine someone coming in every day for a month and repeating the exact same thing, verbatim, every day, and not knowing that I asked for bacon, brown sauce, white coffee and three sugars. She has to confirm at least one of these things every time. Grin

That post was a garbled mess of poor sentence construction and stupid phone auto corrects. Blush
