Wanted to see family dog before he was put down

I know I'm being a bit pathetic, because he was my parents' dog, rather than mine, but I've just had a phone call from my Mum to tell me they put him down this morning.

I didn't know he was ill & would like to have seen him one last time - he'd been with us for 15 years. 'We knew you'd be busy' was the response. Angry

Ohhh pooor poooor you.
It happened to me with my cat.
Had her for 18 years from when I was around 10 years old.
Was going home for weekends and that particular weekend my mum told
me to take lots of pictures of my cat.

Next weekend I went she was not there to greet me........

I was very very heartbroken and upset!!!

I know some people may find this pathetic and stupid but it can be very painful.

Sending you many hugs

Our family dog died while I was traveling overseas. My Dad offered to fly me back (bless him). I made a tough call not to go back at that point.

My Dad said to me that the dog "knew how much I loved him while he was alive and that was what was important". That always comforted me.

I am so sorry for your loss.

Depends - if he was in a lot of pain and you weren't able to visit for awhile then it's rather selfish to think his suffering should be prolonged for your gratification.

samandi · 23/05/2013 08:50

Sorry that sounds unsympathetic - sorry for your loss.

ElizaDoLots · 23/05/2013 09:18

I was half an hour away Samandi - he had been bad for days.

Well in that case I would probably be upset too if my parents didn't let me know. Though perhaps they were very upset too and just trying to deal with it, I don't know.

They are very upset - yes. It's fine now, all is forgiven and dog is buried in their garden.
