I'm 45, slightly overweight, weigh 11.5 stones (ok nearear 12) and 5 ft 7, have acid relux which started 6 weeks ago. so I have to lose weight then all problems will go away. I managed to get a blood test for hormones out of him. But the woman in front of me weighed at least half my weight again, I hope he gave her a lecture too. I went to him because I did sit ups and may have ruptured my obese fat old body.

It really winds me up how BMI is used as stick to beat people with. It is a blunt instrument and does not give the whole picture. It is a useful yard stick to use as an indicator that someone is overweight, but the whole picture is a lot more complicated. what is an unhealthy weight for one person may not be for another. I am currently ridiculously over weight (am doing something about it after DD2) but know from experience that if I get to a 'healthy' BMI of 22.5 I look under weight and my blood pressure gets so low I feel bloody awful all the time and no amount of exercise or time makes it any better (and I take drugs that have a raising blood pressure side effect). I have therefore concluded that for me that weight is too low as I fee too ill to function! For other people this is not the case.

It has been a bit of a cliche that whatever is wrong with a woman must be related to age ('what do you expect at your age' being a common refrain). Yes a lot of things are age and weight related but a lot of people have had serious problems missed because of the assumption that those are the only reasons.

Just to say that a few months back I was the size you are, OP. Not quite as heavy as I'm not as tall, but heading for a size 14 in clothes (my 12s were extremely tight!) and at the top of the bmi range.
I was on tablets for reflux, had chest pain no one could find a reason for, was tired and out of breath the whole time and my memory was so bad I was worried I had the start of dementia. I would have been furious if a Dr had said it was weight.
I lost a stone and a half by accident (had a lot of teeth out and couldn't eat for ages) and am now size 8.
I feel amazing. I have so much energy and all the other problems have disappeared. I'm now determined not to let the weight go back on.
I'm not saying nothing else should be investigated or that the Dr should have been rude. But we have all got used to thinking slightly overweight is normal, partly because of vanity sizing, and maybe doctors should be pointing out that this can cause problems even at quite a low level of overweight.

Pointless thread unless op tells us exactly what her GP said.

As for time travel, I doubt many Drs think we can go back in time, they're just pointing out the things that can become more common as our bodies age.

Don't ever let a doctor talk down to you. If you don't trust that what they're saying is right, tell them that. They are just people and they are as prone to useless arseholishness as the rest of the human race, but because they're not used to having their opinions disregarded they feel like they can say any old thing.

I used to get this a lot, being told I need to be in better shape and my crippling pain will stop. Turns out I was very seriously disabled and bad advice has taken god knows how many years off my life. These days if I think a doctor is wrong, I tell him so and I refuse to pay him unless he offers a better solution. At the very least it usually gets me a few free Valium.

Another vote here for getting your thyroid checked. Sounds pretty classic. Also acid reflux could be Barretts syndrome. If they haven't checked for that I would ask about it.

And to those who say losing weight is a panacea, I was overweight as a teenager/early 20s. Every tome I went to my doctor (even about moles) they told me to lose weight. So when I became really breathless doing anything I put it down to fat. When I got night sweats in the summer I put it down to being fat and too hot. When I struggled to finish meals I cheered. I only went to the doc when my 80year old granny visited and she walked faster into town than I did. Turned out I had Hodgkins disease. Now most times symptoms probably will be caused by fat and eased by losing weight. But doctors need to not be blinded by fat and check for medical reasons too because it is not always the case.

How rude!

I'm the same weight and height as you and I saw a nurse yesterday for a blood test and she kept saying how fit and healthy I looked! (And I wasn't fatter before or anything, if anything I've put on weight!)

Ignore the stupid idiot.

I would have to say I am also 5 7 and weighed just over 12 st, I have lost a stone and been exercising everyday and I do feel so much better, had a complete diet change and things like heart burn etc don't bother me anymore, I do notice if I slip up Certain foods give me hurt burn quite badly ESP high fat foods (had something bad tonight and know I will suffer tomorrow). I intend to lose another 10lbs as still feel slightly heavier then I should be.

I do think anything medical needs to be ruled out but it could just be a weight, fitness issue.
