petticoats?

I don't remember what age my sisters and I stopped having to wear petticoats (thin, little dresses under clothing), but I've never even thought of dressing my DD in one.

Mums used to wear underskirts, with elasticated waistbands, didn't they? I wonder why?

I wear underskirts sometimes. It's makes the skirt warmer when it's cold and makes the skirt look better if it's thin.

Some of the old ladies in the care home still wear petticoats.

Perhaps it was to add an extra layer for some warmth in the days before central heating. It probably also saved the outer clothes from getting sweaty as you didn't wash as much then.

But I needed to wear a petticoat dress to school under my uniform when I was in infants or the teacher made us strip off and run around in just our knickers to musical movement.

I still wear them sometimes of a skirt isn't lined, particularly if it is the type to get caught in a wind. Dd used to have the type that was a vest with several net layer petticoat bits when she wanted her dresses to have puffy skirts.

I like a nice petticoat. It stops a slim skirt riding up when you're wearing tights. If it's cotton and you are wearing tights and a nylon skirt it stops you getting little shocks.
If you're one of the Railway Children, it stops trains!

You wore them under cheap end clothes that didn't have an sewn in petticoat lining.

Some baby girls dresses in Zara come with a petticoat. Dd age 3 loves them, in fact she wore one with tights and a cardi the other day and we had so many compliments. She looked like a little hippy chick

I wonder if we had cheap clothes then. My mum used to make my sisters and I wear homemade, thick petticoats. Awful things and pain to get on and off for PE. I'm sure my friends were the same.

I have one from M&S and I luffs it. It's great for thin dresses and skirts, stops them sticking to tights.

I used to think that underskits/slips/half-petticoats wearing was a sure sign of adulthood.

I have some petticoats! I wear them with unlined dresses or skirts.

I hate underskirts though. They are like wearing a rubber band around the waist

because skirts are normally lined now and people wash clothes more often and more clothes are machine washable, so under layers are less important.

Well, that's something that's happened in my lifetime - the demise of the petticoat!

I was just thinking about the demise of the petticoat last week. I believe there are some hanging around in my lingerie draw but had forgotten why I had them .

I wore one to school when I was in secondary as otherwise my skirt stuck to my thick tights. My mum would never have bought me a lined skirt for school (cheapskate). Now I almost always buy lined skirts.

I have several vintage slips. I think they are sexy!

I have two half slips and a cotton full slip for under V thin cotton dresses in the summer and a satin oe for winter. Dresses. Makes everything hang better.

When I was a tiny my mum made e wear a liberty bodice over my vest in winter. I hated it at five and was the only one in the class :(.
