Eurovision 2013 - OK here we go again

ftm42 · 20/05/2013 12:15

Removing all the supposedly 'homophobic' comments made earlier - I certainly am not homophobic, but that can remain for another context, though I believe I did say that my gay friends find these acts offensive to them as gays -

The whole point was to raise the issue of the obscenity of some Eurovision acts and why we are all OK about naked men writhing about in front of a man wearing a crucifix! This was always meant to be a family show and I cannot bring myself to let my children see this.

We are becoming an over-sexualised society and I think that's awful and especially insulting to Christians when combined with crucifix-wearing - yes, surprise! - I am a Christian! [Now I can watch as mumsnet turns this thread into an anti-Christian one and censors me for being completely intolerant of anything!]

Am I really the only one? I don't believe I am!

So what about ballet performances where dancers wear body suits? What about Marlowe's play? What about opera performances of 17th century pieces which feature the underworld and heathen gods?

"Progressing in the right direction"- whatever you might say about Cesare's performance, his outfit and singing were entirely traditional?

In fact, the main shock effect came from the fact that they were so traditional that people weren't expecting it.

Of course he was camp. But that is another traditional aspect of much of the acting profession since times immemorial.

And incidentally, cross-dressing (not that he was doing it, despite your claims on the other thread) is another ancient tradition in Christian theatre. Shakespeare and all that.

"Am I really the only one? I don't believe I am!"

I do believe you are. Grin

Loulybelle · 20/05/2013 12:35

So its ok that your DH oogles half naked women, but a group of men doing dance is not ok,

Wow your mind is seriously warped.

CSIJanner · 20/05/2013 13:53

FFS - the singer (who was BTW fahbulous darlings!) IS NOT GAY! He's a falsetto - and it was a joy to see such a different, original and something so fantastically staged instead of all the dreary Celion Dion / Johnny Logan wannabes smouldering at the camera.

And I mean you Azerbaijan!

I have more of a problem with Simon Cowell kissing Amanda Holdens bum as my 4year old tried to copy all weekend, only ending up by biting my arse!

ZZZenagain · 20/05/2013 14:00

I didn't even notice that he was wearing a crucifix and I didn't think of the dancers as looking naked tbh either. It didn't strike me personally as obscene but if you felt he was making a mockery of Christianity, I can see you would feel offended by it. I really don't think it was intended that way.

It was just a weird act for me. I was trying to make out why he was singing the way he was because it wasn't particularly enjoyable to listen to. Maybe it was very clever, I don't know. I don't think he was trying to achieve anything in particular with his act tbh. Probably he had that song and they came up with some way of making a show around it. France was odd in her video too (not live), lots of smudged eyeshadow, looked like a drug addict the morning after, writhing about with her hand over candles and stroking a skull. I think all the dancers and so on, too many light effects, OTT outfits, etc that is all just eurovision.

ouryve · 20/05/2013 14:02

Family shows aren't screened late in the evening. HTH.

CrapsWithBears · 20/05/2013 14:03

Someone get the violins out.

ItsallisnowaFeegle · 20/05/2013 14:04

ftm WHY did you start this again? You're entitled to your own opinions but you must realise you're getting no support here? Again, why?

Gigondas · 20/05/2013 14:05

Redoing this doesn't make you any more right.

ZZZenagain · 20/05/2013 14:07

I am surprised your gay friends were offended by that act. I just didn't make a connection in my mind between that act and homosexuality. I might have to have another look at it on youtube. We just had one of those OMG-this-is-a-weird-one discussions at home, rated it and moved on.

I suppose you are seeing the Romanian act, together with the Finnish (?) 2 women kissing and the Swedish Smorgesbord thing with the gay wedding adding up.

HazeltheMcWitch · 20/05/2013 14:09

Ahh, you see this is why threads-about-threads are not a good idea. I can't tell what you're blethering on about. Even still, OP, I can tell that YABU.

valiumredhead · 20/05/2013 14:10

I thought it was comedy genius, so did ds who is 12. Graham Norton's voice over was SO funny Grin

ZZZenagain · 20/05/2013 14:12

eurovision selection finale from Romanian tv. He is not wearing a crucifix, just a hoodie - and with dancing girls this time.

ZZZenagain · 20/05/2013 14:15

Is it even a crucifix he wore. Had a look and I think it is a giant blingy cross.

ZZZenagain · 20/05/2013 14:16

See, it is not a crucifix. Kind of big, blingy cross you see in gangsta rap videos.

Loulybelle · 20/05/2013 14:22

Seriously, i see no issue in what the dances or the singer was wearing.

Op is officially just goady.

conkercon · 20/05/2013 15:36

Go away op. You are still a homophobe despite trying to say you are not. Go and talk to your imaginary gay friends.

JennyEnglishTwo · 20/05/2013 15:41

Were you offended by Ireland's act? I think that was intended to be a vote winner but they misjudged that entirely!

I don't remember a crucifix. What act was that. I sat through it all.

JennyEnglishTwo · 20/05/2013 15:43

oh right. Sorry, Romania's act. I can't remember it !! I thought you were offended by Ireland's blatant attempt to win the gay vote. It didn't work!

Umlauf · 20/05/2013 15:46

I think you are quite ignorant to describe Cezar the Romanian act as a castrato drag queen in a crucifix (Fred about a Fred). As others have said he is a v successful falsetto opera singer and referencing his culture in his costume (which i assume you wouldnt have found offensive had it been at the opera) which I welcome in Eurovision. Much better than the identikit club music acts. Just like the Asturian bagpipes in the Spanish song. I thought it was brilliant he brought something new and different to Eurovision.

The 'naked' men who won't naked at all were in form fitting costumes to emphasise the line of the body necessary for their style of dance. It wasn't sexual, at least I and everyone i watched it with (including a very orthodox catholic and a mormon) didn't find it so.

I note you haven't complained about the woman wearing the spangly top and knickers. That was designed purely to be titillating - no objection there?

Umlauf · 20/05/2013 15:47

I forgot to give you my first Biscuit

lionheart · 20/05/2013 15:51

What is the plural of crucifix anyway? Hmm

SummerRainIsADistantMemory · 20/05/2013 16:09

zz.... the OP would have hyperventilated to see the add I was shown before that vid; some nude male model with twitching biceps advertising spot cream Grin

And if anyone was in doubt of Cezars operatic ability, have a look at

He's an internationally acclaimed counter-tenor who is branching out into pop opera and he has an amazing voice.

as for the dancing, have a look at some other dancers who've chosen to display the artistry and beauty of their bodies in dance and tell me they aren't exceptionally talented human beings:

TheHerringScreams · 20/05/2013 16:44

Romania had a great act. Don't know what you're talking about

Ilovemyself · 20/05/2013 22:20

Ftm42. Religion is a belief based system. And your belief may be different to that of others.

You don't have the right because of your belief to discriminate against others, just as they should not discriminate against your right to wear a cross or show your belief.

The trouble is that you are forcing your views on others and saying they should conform to your belief which is wrong
