To have a small moan about friends/people who smoke...

I think I am being really anal and this is not a "Third World Problem" - BUT...

I smoke very occasionally when pissed drinking but a fair few of my friends smoke.

I don't let anyone smoke in my house as I don't smoke/I have DC and one of my DC has asthma. I ask my friends to go outside to smoke (or go in the shed if its raining).

So many of my friends stand outside my kitchen door smoking, letting the heat out and smoke drifting in making my house smell and then put their butts in my kitchen bin leaving it to stink like an ashtray.

What part of "outside" do people not understand - a lot of smokers seem really oblivious to how gross it is - The other day I used the cash machine after someone used it while they were smoking leaving a big smoke fog all over it - and it was really gross.

I am probably just tuning into a bitter miserable old witch as I get older and maybe since the smoking ban its seems less "usual" to be in a smoky environment - is it just me? Am I a smoking pendant?

Yanbu in the fact, it's your own house and you have stated 'outside'. Smoking indoors with the door open is not outside and what they are doing is rude and disrespectful.
Define what outside means to them as what they are doing, is not it!

I smoke and would not dream of smoking in my own house or in a doorway. It's outside, door closed, or nothing. I had smoker friends over at Christmas, and we'd all go outside to smoke. If one of them fancied one and I didn't I'd give them my keys. And no way would I have old fag butts in the bin inside the house. The idea about giving someone an empty GU pot or other form of ashtray as they go us a good one. YANBU at all, and I say that as a smoker.

I used to use an old coffee jar for any smokers, I cant stand ash or handling butts so dont want to be cleaning out ashtrays. It keeps in the smell and mess, though quite a few smokers would go urghh when they see all the shit in the jar

I get the ashtray out and wash it up the next morning. Before I was pregnant I didn't mind very occasional visitors smoking in the house (no more than 3 or 4 times a year) but nobody's ever tried to without a specific invitation. I only gave up because of getting pregnant, though, and like the smell.

LadyBeagleEyes- if they want to carry out an unsocial habit they should do it outwith my time. Iv actually had a friend I stopped going out with for this reason. I'm not sitting alone whilst you have a fag, if I'm going to sit alone I'd rather do it in my own home than a busy bar on a Say night.

Don't even get me started on people who can't walk and smoke at the same time so demand to stop walking wherever you are going?! Are you fucking kidding????

YANBU but why not just tell them?

YANBU and I am a smoker. They should have the decency to go outside and shut the door properly and I don't understand why they think it is ok to put the ciggy ends in the kitchen bin. Just be straight and ask them to shut the door and put a little pot or something outside and ask them to put their ciggy ends in there.

Neither I or dh smoke so when my brother calls, he's on the verge of being a professional smoker, , he chucks his manky fag butts out our back garden and it does my head in! My Mum maintains she's off them but if you only had half a nose on you, you'd know she had a crafty fag in the car before she calls in, she stinks. Ds1 has ratted on his Nanna a few times having a ciggie out the back garden if she has to mind the kids anytime.

What does drive me bats is if your out with a group of people and most of them smoke your left sitting like a muppet minding drinks while they go out and have a ciggie. Or feeling like your a contestant on an episode of Stars In Their Eyes when you walk into a pub with all them standing around the door YUCK! I needn't have bothered showering, putting on nice clothes and perfume to smell like an ashtray when I sit beside who I'm meeting, gggrrrrr!!!

YANBU, I have never smoked and I really hate the smell of smoke, just revolting.

My FIL allegedly only smokes outside, but when we visit for the weekend everything (including unworn clothes left in the holdall) absolutely stinks.

It seems that he just doesn't realise :(

YANBU smokers know the manners of smoking, stand downwind, close the door behind you, and dispose of your butts thoughtfully never inside.

Although I do not understand the people who complain about being left to sit alone, although my non-smoking friends usually join me outside at ciggy time for some fresh air (which they get because I go out of my way to make sure that my smoke does not blow at them). I once had a conversation from 5 meters away with a friend because her DD was with her.
