I have an interview for a job next Friday and I want to turn it down. The real reason I will turn it down is because I don't feel confident at the moment, it's a side step for the same money, less leave, longer commute, not even sure I want to stay in this industry at the moment. I applied because I'm really unhappy in my current job but now think I should hold on to go to a BETTER job rather than just any old job.

Anyway on to my AIBU! I want to decline citing a vague 'personal reasons'. DP thinks I should give a specific reason even if it's a lie.

So AIBU to give 'personal reasons' as the reason for my decline?

I work in a small industry and people talk. I also don't want to be flakey (even though I am being a bit!)

You don't need a reason to turn down an interview. Just call and say you are no longer interested in the job and do not wish to attend for the interview.

yes, just say you aren't interested any more, don't change into unknown with longer commute and the same money!

I'm trying to think of a reason why having a specific reason would benefit the employer other than to satisfy a vague curiousity.

I'd say 'personal circumstances' rather than 'personal reasons', but just because that sounds more clearly to me like communicating that I'm not turning down the job because of anything to do with them.

I would probably withdraw my application for practical reasons - longer commute and that you feel it's a side step

I'd consider going anyway to get interview experience for the job you do want.

I think you should take the bull by the horns and take it if you are offered it. You are unhappy where you are now, it may lead to better things.
