To wonder why people who donate clothes to charity shops cut the labels off.

I know its not the shops that do it as I used to volunteer in one and a lot of clothes came in with both the size and the shop label removed both from the neckline and the inside of the garment

I have just bought a lovely floaty top in one shop and as the label has been removed I don't know if I have paid £3.49 for something I could have got new in Primark or Matalan for about £12 or something I would have had to pay £20+ for in a higher end retailer. But I liked the top and bought it. Also as the size had to be guessed I took a chance that it actually fitted me ( it did)

I also don't think it is fair on the Charity that donators want to help, price cheap goods too high and the shop will get a rep for being too expensive and no-one will buy - price too low and although the customer is happy it will lose money for the charity. I would imagine such mistakes are common when the shops are run in the main by unpaid volunteers who don't know the difference between Primark and Prada just by the feel and look of a garment.

If you like the garment why is the brand name relevant ? You see garment, think that you like it, look at the price , and then you buy it if you can afford it.

What annoys me is cutting out the label telling you the washing instructions/ fabric composition

The stupidly long side lables in thin T shirts show and get the chop. Likewise those in lacy tops designed to have a vest under them.

Lables with names on get the chop, lables that stick out also meet the scissors.

I'm constantly surprised at how I can wear a top for months and then suddenly, one day, the label will infuriate me. Not sure if it's me having an irritable or sensitive day or if the labels suddenly take on an irrationally annoying quality which I can't abide and have to cut it out. Never occurred to me that anyone would think that this was a deliberate ploy when I donated them to charity.

I particularly don't understand knickers that have a label at the back hangs down into one's bum crack. How does anyone tolerate that?

I put my DC's name on their clothes labels and if I donate them I cut the label off as I don't really want their name on things which might appear in the shop etc.

My Mum always cuts labels off her clothes as she doesn't like the feel of them. So I really don't think there is anything sinister going on at all!

I cut them out because they are itchy. DD2 finds them dreadfully itchy and can't tolerate them at all.

Some shops donate unsold new shops to charity and cut the labels out first to stop them being resold on ebay.

Why don't manufacturers use softer materials for labels. They hurt like hell.

I can't stand labels and always cut them out or unstitch them. Even if this occasionally makes holes in the clothes! Same for the dc.

my last job was manager of a charity job. The brand was important. We had a pricing structure according to brand and we had to strictly adhere to it. We had shop audits regularly to make sure it was carried out and also mystery shoppers. My job was performance monitored. So in the lower bronze (and yes, they actually called it that) category (of brands) was Primark, supermarket clothes, old C&A, etc.....some of our shops (not mine) did not sell lower bronze if they were in a good area or a refit /training shop. I sometimes covered some of these shops. Customers would donate with labels cut out (they told me this) because they did not want their donated Primark, Tu, Tesco etc to go to rags. If it was good condition, the garment would still go out..without the label(if i was sorting/ pricing, anyhow!) But in the shop i trained in...even if it was new with tags Primark, George etc...the manager would rag it. It drove me nuts as she could've passed them onto stores that did sell lower bronze (we did have a driver between the shops) but no, she'd always rag... we did get money for rags, but not as much as retail, obviously.

because clothing is so disposable these days, charity shops can afford to pick and choose as so much is donated. There are many now that won't sell the lower brands. Luckily my own shop wasn't fussy and we did well. The shop is in an area of about 80% immigrants and they were grateful for bargains and didn't care about labels so much. But a few miles up the road in our Wimbledon branch..v different story and no Primarni

BDF Newlife employ people to remove labels from the clothes they sell in the store.

I believe the donating stores and manufactures request this.

They do sell a huge amount of clothing so sum may get then donated to charity shops.

a charity shop near me hikes the pirces up of ANYTHING that has a so called 'better' label in it. I couldn't give a monkeys about where something is from. of I like it I'll wear it so tbh if there's no label in it, then they cant hike the price up because of it. (unless its got the logo on it of course - sportswear or toys for example)

This thread has made me happy. I thought I was in the minority with my label-phobia. I cannot tolerate them at all. I have cut many a hole in my new items of clothing trying to ensure not a single thread has been left.

When I've finished with my clothes, they all go to my local charity shop. Sorry if it's a PITA but I assume they'd rather have label-less clothes than no clothes.

Lots of clothes especially M and S ones aren't second hand but go to the charity shop as they are slight seconds or out of season or something, the labels are usually cut, but you can still see where they are from.

I cut my labels off as they are irritating.

Me too. Can't stand the labels itching on back of neck or shoulders, drives me mad.
Also many trousers are too long in the crotch and I double the waist band over, especially with elasticated waists, so take those labels out too as don't want them to be seen < not because I am a size 8 but because it looks tacky.
Same with labels that itch on the side seams of tops. If they don't bother me, I leave them in.

I have bought loads of clothes from Charity Shops and the label I don't even look at. It's the look and feel of the item I'm interested in.

I know that many shops donate new clothes to charity and always cut the labels out or score them with an indelible marker to avoid fraudulent refunds.

I cut out all the labels in my clothes as when my DM comes to stay she insists on folding my washing and always comments on my size... which is an obsession for her!

I worked in a charity shop where we had to start cutting them out so some do, I can't remember thereasning but we all thought it was a bunch of crap!

I cut labels out of my clothes now as I have started getting really irritated by them, never was until very recently though but the past few months I've started getting overly sensitive to them!

I cut the labels of most things! The children hate them scratching their neck and I hate labels sticking up in clothes. I cut the ribbon loops to hang them buy off as well.
