My neighbour is outside mowing/trimming land that belongs to us. Should I be annoyed or grateful?

There's a small strip of grass/bushes opposite our house. It's the top of a private road so technically that bit is ours. The grass has got a bit overgrown (was mown 2 weeks ago) and one of the bushes was, admittedly, a bit too bushy.

It was on the list to do this weekend. DH is working away this week.

The neighbour has been out with a chainsaw, a strimmer, a mower. I want him to go away! I barely know him (he lives 5 doors down.) Is he doing this to be nice? Is he being an arse? Should I go out with a pitchfork?

I get why you're embarassed - but the chances are all your neighbours with the immaculate houses can remember the day when they had little kids and were too tired and busy to trim the garden, too.

I remember dh dithering once about whether to mow the neighbours lawn - it was one of those at the front that joins on with no obvious line between houses, and once you've got the mower out it only took a few minutes extra to do the lot. He was all worried about whether the neighbour would be embarrassed if he mowed it. (He did mow it, she said thanks, it was fine!)

Your husband may have views on your neighbour attending to your bush while he is away working.

When my older dc were babies our lovely neighbour david used to do our lawns front and back- he was retired and said that by the time he had warmed the mower up he might just as well do ours. In reality he was lovely and just wanted to help out (and make a fuss of the babies). When I retire I hope I can find a nice young couple to help out!

I secretly want to trim the hedges of the house 5 doors down. My own could do with doing but theirs would be a great challenge (fill half the pavement). I would ask first, but probably will never do it. Maybe hoovering my own home would help..,,

My ndn decided to cut the grass opposite my house,(the council usually do it) then he got out his chainsaw and decided to cut down trees. I asked him to stop and he chased me down the road with the chainsaw.
I didn't give him a beer.

I did this for my neighbour - it seemed a bit churlish not to as I was out there with the lawnmower anyway! I did text first to ask, though.

Some people are just funny about longish grass; my dad is, he has endless conversations with his neighbours about the length of it

You are reminding me to get DH to do our hedge before next door decides it's an eyesore. She's lovely, but she's not as tall as DH and her garden slopes slightly. She cuts it lower than looks right our side. In any case she's getting on and it's a great beast of a hedge. DH and his petrol clippers ought to do it.

N-S hedge so no great shading issues, it's actually us who loose evening sun, but gain privacy.
