Proms

My daughter and I have been spending a lot of time looking for a beautiful prom dress, looking at choices for hairdos, jewellery, shoes, transport etc. I have been really supportive (and generous) but last night was devastated when she announced that she also requires another outfit for the after prom party. Is this really necessary and am I being unreasonable? Please help I feel a bit cheated today. Thanks Mums.

I think adults resent proms because we never had them when we were kids, it's not really a UK tradition and just yet another 'tradition' imported from the US.

What gets me is not so much the idea of a party to mark the occasion but the unrelenting pressure to spend money. So it's a dress, hair, make up, tan, manicure, pedicure...now after prom dress? Oh and not to mention transport like a limo.

Add it all up and you are talking a lot of money. Like I say, I've stumped up £200 for one single night for my daughter and she's bitching it's not enough. I wouldn't spend £200 on a night out! And I have a full time job! DD is 16!

What does this teach our kids? I cannot think of a single positive message.
