to complain about a supermarket banning all school children??

My 14 year old son and his friend went to buy a few items from our local Morrisons supermarket, which is something they have done many times before, however this time they were turned away at the entrance and told that any child under 16 was not allowed in without an adult.

When I rang to ask why I was told that school children steal from the shop and are abusive to staff. When questioning the store duty manager further it turned out that they knew the children concerned but had decided to ban all children as it was easier to maintain the ban.

My son and his friend are good kids and would not do this.

There are no signs up about this new policy, just the embarrassment for the children being turned away.

To me this is a very sweeping generalisation of what a generation of people are like.

We live in a small town so the local supermarket is also the same as your local shop.

This now means that children can no longer run errands for parents/grandparents, this will also affect those parents who have a disability/illness and rely on older children to help out.

I pointed out that in the local paper it was usually middle aged women or drunken 30ish men that were reported on for causing problems in the store, were they going to ban them too??

I have no problem with the store suggesting that children can't use the store just before school or for say the first hour after school, when you would probably get large numbers descending on the store but a complete blanket ban seems ridiculous and unfair to me, especially when there are no notices up.

What do you think??

Dalton was very pleased at getting Ant and Dec at such a good price - seems so silly then to not let the people in that you are trying to appeal to and want as your future customers in 5 years time - those 5 years will fly by and those very same teens will shop for their weekly food else where

McNewPants2013 · 14/05/2013 21:59

it is discrimination.

jamdonut · 14/05/2013 21:59

Our Morrisons, which is opposite my kids secondary school ,do allow them in (though they were banned for a time),but at lunch time and for a short time after school, a special till is opened to cope with them. However they are watched like hawks. They are banned from the petrol station shop, and also the nearby Aldi (at lunch-time). Macdonalds,(on the same site as the other shops) is , however, happy to serve the kids at lunchtime.Hmm

JW12345 · 14/05/2013 22:04

I haven't got a problem with banning or restricting children just before school or immediately after, as I understand there can be problems however a complete blanket ban on anyone under 16 is ridiculous! This includes weekends, evenings, school holidays. Our children aren't allowed out of school at lunch times.

I don't think it is wrong for the shop to be cautious. It must be frustrating, and why should they have to put up with it? A blanket ban, though, seems a bit heavy handed.

Once again it is a minority who spoils it for the majority.

jamdonut · 14/05/2013 22:05

I forgot to say it is only year 10 and above who are allowed out.

NiceTabard · 14/05/2013 22:17

We had two at a time in some newsagents when I was a girl.

But this is totally different - a blanket ban on all under unaccompanied under 16s in a supermarket . Ridiculous and out of order.

JW12345 · 14/05/2013 22:17

Thank you for all your comments, I'll let you all know what they say tomorrow.

NiceTabard · 14/05/2013 22:19

Some under 16s are not at school and have their own children FGS. It's not that uncommon.

Are they banned too? Where are they supposed to get food and stuff if that's the only shop in town?

piprabbit · 14/05/2013 22:25

You could try tweeting Ant and Dec

It really isn't on.

JW12345 · 14/05/2013 22:27

I don't think they'd risk upsetting their sponsor Smile

Jam donut.

It like saying don't alcohol to 18 year old because some cause trouble while drinking.

McNewPants2013 · 14/05/2013 22:28

Don't serve

WorraLiberty · 14/05/2013 22:30

My local Morrisons would be fucked if they did this

Every morning it's full of panicking school kids, dashing round for their forgotten cookery ingredients.

JW12345 · 14/05/2013 22:32

Our's is like that in the morning too, or was!!

quoteunquote · 14/05/2013 22:35

Would be worth asking in legal if they can do this?

BehindLockNumberNine · 14/05/2013 22:38

Oooh, this would make me cross.
Ds is 13 (but tall for his age)
He is a good kid, quiet, with just a small handful of equally nice, polite, friends.

They often pop into our local morrisons at the weekend to buy softdrinks and snacks before heading off to athletics training / competitions. (or before having an afternoon on the ps3)

I hate this whole tarring of a whole generation with one brush'

Utterly ridiculous.

Shame on you Morrisons.

Rockinhippy · 14/05/2013 22:46

Morrison's is our local shop, what a ridiculously discriminatory stance from some idiot manager, I'm sure its not something that head office could legally back, you just cant put a blanket ban on a whole section of a community, because a few bad apples have done wrong, ridiculously unfair

I would be beyond fuming if they did this to my DD & would kick up the biggest stink, she would be frightened, upset & very very embarrassed - she isn't my carer, but I do ave health problems & some days its a godsend that she is now old enough to pop down to Morrison's for me.

There, that should help get the thread noticed in google Grin

JW12345 · 14/05/2013 22:51

Thank you Grin As soon as I hear from the Ormskirk Morrisons manageress I might suggest she gets a mumsnet login and sees all of your comments.

piprabbit · 14/05/2013 22:54

You could just email her a link.
And if you tweet Morrisons and Ant & Dec, they may not respond (initially) but a lot of their followers might see your story.

BlackeyedSusan · 14/05/2013 22:54

hmm rock. are you supposed to view that sideways?

Just asked DP - seems it isn't just Ormskirk. He works at a local branch. He said under 16's aren't allowed in without an adult at his store.

Suggest escalating this one to Dalton Philips.

Rockinhippy · 14/05/2013 23:00

Ooo, my DPs sometimes shop in that branch - I must tell them about the idiot manager & the stupid policy Grin

My DM hates this sort of thing as she's has had similar problems with another localish store herself (she's in a wheelchair), though ŵhen I contacted the area manager on her behalf he was mortified & drove from Manchester to personally appologise & take her a huge bouquet of flowers, the manger concerned was in deep trouble as a result :)
