To think you shouldn't turn down the page corners of a library book?

Yes I know. Minor problem and all that.

DS age 8 is doing it. I told him to use a bookmark. DH tells me I'm being ridiculous.

Opinions please!

i used to do this with all books that i read

now i use magnetic bookmarks. they're fab and never come off unless you fiddle with them as you read Grin

OrangeFireandGoldashes · 13/05/2013 20:56

YANBU. It's not your book! If you want to fold the corners down [shudder] or write in it [dry heave], then buy your own copy.

InLoveWithDavidTennant · 13/05/2013 20:56

tear pages out? write in margins? Shock what fresh new kind of hell is this? Shock

Sparklingbrook · 13/05/2013 20:57

I am finding this thread deeply upsetting.

PointeShoes · 13/05/2013 20:57

Nope that's damaging the book. At uni, people write their notes all over the pages and highlight them!

CloudsAndTrees · 13/05/2013 20:58

I have this issue with my ds, but he's 12 and I'm Blush because he really should know better by now.

He shows me the books from his school library, and I can see that he's right when he says 'but everyone else does it!' Apparently bookmarks fall out and get lost in school bags too easily, and they are a hassle to find when you are about to go to sleep. Hmm

I have failed Sad

Binkyridesagain · 13/05/2013 20:59

I'm changing my will, ALL my books are coming with me when I die, I couldn't leave them to suffer this fate.

Sparklingbrook · 13/05/2013 20:59

Why stop at just a corner?

Binkyridesagain · 13/05/2013 21:01

sparkling, you could have put a warning up. I'm having palpitations

KatyDid02 · 13/05/2013 21:01

I wouldn't do it with a library book but I used to do it with my own books.
As for writing in the margins, I do it all the time with academic text books but only ones that I own.

AmberLeaf · 13/05/2013 21:03

I actually hate bookmarks anyway!

I wouldn't write in a book though, unless it was a study companion and even then only in pencil.

Sparklingbrook · 13/05/2013 21:04

I still have my scribbled in copy of Macbeth somewhere from GCSE. We all had to buy our own copy and the Letts Revision Guide. Grin

Oh and A Tale of Two Cities and The Importance of Being Earnest.

OutragedFromLeeds · 13/05/2013 21:08

OP YANBU

Corner folders YABVVVVVVVVU. Shame on all of you. You don't damage something that doesn't belong to you.

Yawn4theday · 13/05/2013 21:15

No turning down the page, no writing in them.

Worst of all, unidentifiable blobs of stuff that one hopes is just food.

pigsDOfly · 13/05/2013 21:17

It drives me mad when I'm reading a library book and some idiot has 'corrected' something the author has written.

Yes, it is annoying when there is a glaringly awful grammatical error all the way through a book, as in a library book it was reading recently, but it's even more annoying when someone has found every example and crossed it through in blue ink.

Do these people sit reading with pen at the ready or, as I imagine, spend 10 minutes looking for a pen so they can feel all smug and self satisfied from knowing better than someone who's actually had a book published.

NicholasTeakozy · 13/05/2013 21:28

YANBU in the slightest. I don't turn corners of books I own never mind books belonging to others. To bookmark I use a shop receipt and fold it over the top of the page which locks it in place.

Anifrangapani · 13/05/2013 21:29

I use the corners turned down as a reader review. If there is loads of them the book is hard going so gets left on the shelf.

myroomisatip · 13/05/2013 21:42

No YANBU

I never ever turn down the corners of pages of any books, not even my own.

:) My Dad loved books and he taught me to treat them with respect. I will never forget that :)

Oddly, my son won't even buy a magazine that looks even slightly crumpled Hmm and he was too young to be influenced by my Dad.

Kasterborous · 13/05/2013 22:00

No YANBU, it's one of my pet hates in any book not just library ones. You can use anything as a book mark, my current one is an old lottery ticket.

CleanHankie · 13/05/2013 22:50

If you have to turn down the corners, please please please make sure you unfold them before you return the book. It is the cause of most papercuts in Librarians Grin

Never highlight any passage in a book that doesn't belong to you. All post-it notes must be removed before returning also. Do you hear me Uni students? I do not wish to spend most of my shelving time, removing the pesky things like I did last week. Just because it's self return doesn't mean you get away with it!

(Btw Does anyone know how I remove those lines that inform you someone has highlighted it on the Kindle?)

Nelly000 · 13/05/2013 22:55

I NEVER, NEVER turn down corners or damage books that aren't mine in anyway.

In fact, I'd have serious issues writing in a book I owned.

Deary me, I need to lie down...

HerrenaHarridan · 13/05/2013 23:16

Never deface books! What the hell kind of sickos are you!

Writing in study guides is acceptable.

If you can't cope with using a proper book mark use a post it Grin

You can get lots of really cool book marks, my mum has one that is an electronic dictionary Envy

WhereYouLeftIt · 13/05/2013 23:26

Turning down corners? Shock
Breaking spines?
Scribbling in margins?
Tearing out pages?

FreudiansSlipper · 13/05/2013 23:34

YANBU Of course you shouldn't

Would you if you borrowed a book from a friend

greencolorpack · 13/05/2013 23:38

I think turning over corners is much the lesser of two evils than people who read books and put them face down (ruining the spine) shudders!!!
