Have a read about it [http://m.guardian.co.uk/film/2013/may/13/brave-director-criticises-sexualised-merida-redesign?CMP=twt_gu here]]

Apols if this has already been pointed out today! I'm just in from work & saw it. [anger]

I can hardly see a difference either. Much ado about nothing.

KellyElly · 14/05/2013 09:14

Can't really get my knickers in a knot about Disney characters, sorry, or Bratz dolls or barbies etc.

PatPig · 14/05/2013 09:59

They look pretty similar to me. A bit narrower at the waist maybe.

themaltesecat · 14/05/2013 10:14

Typical, unwatchable Disney shite. Who gives a toss?

MissyMooandherBeaverofSteel · 14/05/2013 10:20

Slutty? Really? Confused

As far as I know the merchandise wasn't selling that well from brave. Maybe if everyone signing the petition had went out and bought the stuff they wouldn't have had to revert back to their tried and tested methods.

It doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things anyway, steer your daughters towards more suitable role models if you hate disney so much.

Amrapaali · 14/05/2013 11:10

The waist looks the same to me, the big belt makes it appear narrow... (Any time spent on S & B boards is not wasted!!)

The eyes are the culprits. They have a come-hither look. As MissyMoo said, not important in the grand scheme of the universe.

Effingjeff · 14/05/2013 12:28

My 4 year old said 'she is beautiful as she is mummy-why are they changing her'? Fair point!!!

SingingSilver · 14/05/2013 13:56

It's a bit hypocritical that they made this big song and dance about how she was perfect as she was, and they give her Bratzdoll eyes and a womanly figure.

PatPig · 14/05/2013 14:23

Children and parents choose what to buy. If the 'natural' look sells, they would make more. It's not a conspiracy against women, it's just about making money.

Obviously it's not selling, so they are changing it slightly to try to increase sales. If they still don't sell, they will cancel it altogether.

StuntGirl · 14/05/2013 16:41

I'm a bit worried about the eyesight of the posters who can't tell the difference! Grin

TSSDNCOP · 14/05/2013 18:27

She was fabulous as she was. I'm not a big Disney fan but I thought Merida Mark I epitomised the essence of the story.

RubyGates · 14/05/2013 19:32

She was fine as she was.

She was a proper role model. Mark 2 is just another glamorous sparkly air-head.

trice · 14/05/2013 19:47

I hate it. She is supposed to be a child not a page 3 stunner. Why can we not have a wider definition of beauty?

Did you see that they have made a cartoon that transforms my little ponies into busty young women? That is just bizarre. Sorry I can't link as I am on phone.

VivaLeBeaver · 14/05/2013 19:49

I can't see a difference either. Maybe the eyes are a slightly different shape?

RunRabbit · 14/05/2013 19:53

They should have redone the story instead. Very lack lustre for a Pixar film.

markymark · 14/05/2013 20:09

Another who is disappointed. DD is 5 and loves the Disney princesses, I try and steer her away as can't stand them, but bought Brave as thought it was a good compromise. Why did they have to do this? Agree the changes aren't massive but they are significant as they are completely out of line with her character in the film. Eyeliner? When she complained about having her hair put up?

MuddlingMackem · 14/05/2013 20:17

Very glad DD already has a Merida doll, and she won't be getting another one.

LemonPeculiarJones · 14/05/2013 20:33

It fucked me off too.

Dismal, really. A character who was designed to be a bit more of a real girl reduced to a sexual stereotype.

The fact that she has been transformed into an older-looking, more sexual young woman, yet it supposed to be the same character, seems a worrying reflection of the pornification of everything and the sexualisation of kids in media, which is driven by morality-free and principle-free money grubbing.

Just as magazines didn't (don't?!) want black women on their covers because that edition would sell slightly less, Disney have purely sought to boost sales with the worst kind of brain-dead marketing.

It's that sort of formulaic money-trumps-ideology bullshit that is turning the studio into a factory of the mediocre.

DonDrapersAltrEgoBigglesDraper · 15/05/2013 08:54

To all those who say they can't really see any difference ... try this, from a male cartoonist. He explains it very, very well...

GoblinGranny · 15/05/2013 08:56

Does this help you see the differences, LadyBeagleEyes?

Oh I love that link, brilliant work. I especially love the 'remodeled' Batman!
