Sorry if this has been done before, but here goes:

I first became aware of AK when weaning dd1 in 2009. I bought her book, thought that some advice/recipes were pretty good, then realised that I was actually having to prepare whole batches of separate food. Dd1 is now 4yo an still pretty fussy where food is concerned. So, far from broadening her tastes, I'm suspicious that AK weaning may be at least partially responsible for this.

I can't stand AK on her tv show. She's very pretty, in a cougar-type way. However, I think it's weird getting this impression from a kids' cookery show. I think it's all about her, IYSWIM. Hope that I'm not the only one who thinks this

Have you bought an AK kids' lunchbox from BHS? Yuk! I wouldn't feed into my dog! Acidly-tasting "fruity" water, shit-bit banana-chips and measly weeny biscuits. Okay, not all AK's fault, but certainly something he's put her name to.

Her mug is everywhere where kids food is concerned: AK food = healthy kids food. I think not. At least not tasty kids food, anyway

Yabu. Her books are really helpful and both my dcs love the food from them. They eat a wide variety of stuff and so far (only 2 and 4 so not counting my chooks yet!) are very un fussy adventurous eaters who aren't phased with eating local cuisines when we go on holiday or go to a new restaurant.

I don't think she's thin, she's just a healthy size, society appears to have forgotten what that is. And I never understand people who follow anything childcare related without engaging brain.

In my Ak book it has a toddler recipe using peanuts but my doctor said not to give my dd peanuts/peanut butter until she is 5..
Confusing?

I'm not really familiar with her stuff. Does it have anything to do with hiding things in sauces to trick children into eating things and making silly faces out if food? I think the DTs may have had an AK meal in a restaurant when very young but it wasn't that appetising.
We did the savoury purées, sweet purées and breakfast cereals route then they had whatever we did just mashed down. It never occurred to me that they shouldn't have tomatoes or strawberries before a certain age either! They've survived quite well and are not in the least bit fussy.

AK does the vegetable and fruit purées too. I didn't ever hide vegetables in DS's food although there are a couple of good recipes for hidden vegetable pasta sauce for older children who are a bit fussy.

I just found there were lots of lovely recipes that we could all eat.

As I said upthread I pretty much followed her advice and DS will eat anything.

I do remember making faces out of sandwiches Blush but it was for DS's first birthday party and he certainly didn't notice. I had fun though!

MolotovCocktail · 12/05/2013 13:50

How on earth is it AK's fault that you didn't/don't enage your brain in the kitchen?

I'm actually just Grin at this. I don't know if its meant to be insulting or not!

I thought that recipes were supposed to be followed to get the desired effect, no?

Doubtfuldaphne, is there a particular reason not to give your child nuts, such as family history of allergies? The general advice IIRC is whole nuts not until 5 because they're a choking hazard, but things like peanut butter are fine.

My DC had an AK meal in I think Legoland once it was minging!

Haven't really had anything else to do with her though.
After a dabble in BLW with DC3 I've decide I'm very much in the normal weaning camp.

notso · 12/05/2013 19:02

Posted to soon thanks to DS3

No need for purees if weaned at 6 months +, finger food an spoon feeding, the same meals for everyone and spoons are friends not foe!

AdoraBell · 13/05/2013 17:41

Can't remember who asked up thread why anyone needs a book for pures etc?

I wanted a book because I wasn't shown how to cook at home and MIL was banging on about why I should buy jars of baby food! And OH started backing her up. Having a recipe book to refer to gave me a tool to use in my battle to feed my DDs as I wanted to. I bought the one that was jointly worked on with a dietician from Great Ormomd street hospital and was quite surprised to see the recipes from 1 year up used salt, I just didn't bother with.

I never set out with the intention of actually buying an AK book, I borrowed one out of our local library...which I promptly burned a ring shape onto the back of because I sat it on top of a hot ring and never noticed until it was too late! Ended up giving the library money for it Grin

Interesting, I followed AK with DS1 & he's the fussiest eater ever (he's 3 now). Just started weaning DS2 just doing whatever felt right & he at 7.5 months eats pretty much anything.
