To report my neighbours to the RSPCA about the care of their dog?

Don't know if I am being incredibly precious but this is really starting to bother me. My next door neighbour but one has a young, large Alsatian which is left out in their (small) garden around the clock and never walked. Am not entirely sure whether it slept outside during the recent very cold weather but it certainly has slept outside for the past month or so. It's fed and watered but that's about it, as far as I can work out. Dog hasn't shown any obvious signs of aggression that I have noticed but prone to barking loudly at any activity in the neighbouring gardens and whining to be let in. I have a 2-year old dd who plays in the garden a lot and is scared of the dog and next door (bordering their garden) are about to have a baby. The owner has told me a previous dog he had bit a child but that it was the child's fault for goading the animal (???).I don't want to over-react because don't have any evidence of abuse and I like dogs but the fact the dog is never walked bothers me and I worry that it may have a freak out one day and charge over the fence into our garden. Any advice?

do it quesadilla, i dont think the rspca divulge who has reported.

MikeOxard · 07/05/2013 16:00

I have reported to the rspca before - a puppy living in a shed. They didn't do anything as apparently it's ok as long as they are fed and watered and the owner said he took it for walks. :(

I like Mango's idea - what area are you in? Maybe a nice MNer would like to volunteer to take it on walks? or give it a lovely new home No idea why someone would get a dog and then neglect it like that because they are total bastards and need a smack.

quesadilla · 07/05/2013 16:08

I did think about that Mango but the guy - bizarrely - seems quite attached to the dog and I get the impression he wouldn't really appreciate that as he might take it as a criticism. Also in practice if I were to do it I would have to take the dog out with my dd most of the time which I don't think she would like as she is quite scared of it. I guess I could try it once and see what the reaction was.

The RSPCA will do nothing. They are the most useless organisation masquerading as a charity. In your position, I would steal the dog in the dead of the night and have a nice home lined up for it.

snuffaluffagus · 07/05/2013 16:45

We had exactly this with some neighbours years ago. The RSPCA came around and looked but didn't do anything as the dog was fed and watered and could get out of the rain (roof extended slightly). It was a long time ago though!

mrsjay · 07/05/2013 17:03

phone the council dog warden first they will be able to take a look at the dog, and you can do it ANON same as the RSPCA, there is no law about walking dogs if they are fed and watered you dont need to walk a dog if you dont want too but you do need to care for them , and it is barking so , people who get dogs and neglect them like this really get on my wick

furbaby · 07/05/2013 17:21

I am with you charliefox sometimes the law is an arse and we have to do what's right . I would nick dog as well .... tough luck owner if you can, t look after it you can, t have it . Poor dog did, nt ask to be neglected .

mrsjay · 07/05/2013 17:24

you cant honestly steal somebodies dog Confused

furbaby · 07/05/2013 19:06

Why not ..... dog did, nt choose his shit life .

Charliefox · 07/05/2013 19:08

Well, technically mrsjay, you can! You can actually steal it. It may be against the law (is it? Is a dog a possession??) but who gives a shit. The owners don't, otherwise they'd care more for the animal in the first place.

Charliefox · 07/05/2013 19:10

My friend's done it. She knew a couple of dogs were being badly treated so she waited until she knew the owners were out, then flew round to the house, bundled the dogs in the back of her car and sped off with them! I also wouldn't hesitate to do it.

furbaby · 07/05/2013 19:16

Go charliefox go .... sod the law .
I would steal any animal if I thought it was, nt being looking after ..... fucking tough luck you don, t care for your pet then I will !!!

Lara2 · 07/05/2013 20:11

The RSPCA will do precisely nothing. Be careful of rescuing the dog yourself too. I have a friend who did that - got a dog out of awful circumstances, called the RSPCA ( for the second time, first time they said they were too busy to check on the dog!) and they said that the dog was now her responsibility and they could do nothing! Luckily she managed to find him an amazing home (against the odds) and he is now a happy, healthy dog. I would go with the advice of trying other rescues - good luck.

mrsjay · 07/05/2013 20:19

there is no way Id have the neck to steal a dog I would report somebody but it belongs to somebody else,

MarcoPolo123 · 16/04/2021 04:42

Did anyone else have this same issue as my next door neighbour has a GS also who is left outside day and night in all weather. I hear him all night either barking or tossing his metal bowl around. A number of neighbours and visitors say had anyone reported it. I have reported to Council and not sure if anything was followed up on. Thinking of also phoning RSPCA as others above have. It’s such a shame but exercised or let inside. Why have a dog and then just ignore it?

Hollyhocksarenotmessy · 16/04/2021 08:41

In defence of the RSPCA, it's not that they don't give a shite, it's that they dont make the laws. If an animal has food, water, shelter and any necessary medical care, there is nothing they can do other than advise the owner. The law sets a pretty low animal welfare bar.

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 16/04/2021 09:51

@quesadilla

Ashokan no it doesn't have any shelter. I am on the fence about the sleeping outside bit: my DH points out that where he comes from dogs sleep outside all the time but that's in the tropics and they still have shelter and get exercised. It's the fact it's never exercised and never let into the house that bothers me. I might call the RSPCA and just find out if they have guidelines on this before making a decision.
Call the RSPCA and really emphasise that the dog has no shelter. No food / water / shelter tend to be the only things that get the RSPCA out unless the cameras are rolling

This. Unfortunately other than a friendly world, the only powers the rspca have come from the police so unless the law is being broken, they are powerless
GraduallyWatermelon · 16/04/2021 11:47

Sadly the dog is probably dead now

🧟‍♀️🧟‍♂️

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 16/04/2021 12:39

@quesadilla

Is that right, miggy? Do there have to be signs of actual abuse for them to get involved? Surely not giving a dog that size any exercise constitutes cruelty?
I think you'll find that signs of actual abuse aren't nearly as important to the RSPCA as the presence of a camera crew is, sadly.
Maraudery · 17/04/2021 12:40

@NeverDropYourMoonCup

Unfortunately the rspca can only remove pets when the law is broken. It is not against the law to not walk your dog
