To believe I was served the worst curry ever in the history of curries both foreign and domestic?

I went to a "gastro" (hmmm makes me laugh) pub for lunch and ordered a chicken curry. It arrived, no naan, no poppadoms, nothing to add to the general curry experience. The plate held just rice and lumps of chicken in what looked like thick gravy. Nothing in this gravy other than big lumps of chicken. There was a slight aroma of curry the same way a Mills and Boon novel describes the subtle scent of jasmine wafting by on a breeze.

I hid my initial disapointment by sobbing quietly into my napkin. But I nearly choked when I tasted the sauce. It was bisto slightly flavoured with curry and a shed load of sugar. It tasted like brown curry custard. It was fecking horrid.

I couldnt eat it and the waitress asked what was the problem. I told her it was the sugar. She said maybe the chef had put too much in!

Sugar? Is it me?

Trazzle I found a decent one in the suburbs of Paris in the end. Opened just before I left.

My local curry house does sprout paneer and it's actually really tasty.

Every pub that sells anything more than pork scratchings and bags of KP seem to be buying a chalk board for a menu and marketing themselves as a Gastro pub.

I've pretty much stopped eating in pubs, it used to be a fairly cheap place to eat about 15-20 years ago as they introduced food as a loss leader in order to get people to sup more. However the prices have gone sky high and it all seems to be a generic menu of microwaved pre-packed crap. If I want something tasteless, processed and riddled with e-numbers, I'll go to Burger King and save a few quid.

Sugar??Confused

My worst curry nightmare was dinner at friends and they whipped out..Liver Curry. OMG I'm not a big liver fan and even if I was..curried liver?Confused

Anyway I was polite and choked it down with copious amounts of rice and wine.

Being polite gets you nowhere. The next time we saw them they made it again 'Because I know how much you enjoyed it last time..'

My DH once ordered a curry which was served with a raspberry sauce (like the ice cream sauce) all over it, seemingly this was the "chef's speciality".DH said it was bizarre and awful.

In fairness I have had some terrible curries in Bangladesh when I lived there, I love English curry, it is not anything like Indian ones, no gristle or bone and comes with a naan. First thing I always do I
When I get back is go for a curry.

I have started making curries. I got the hairy bikers curry book for my birthday. So far, it beats takeaway for taste and cost. Just not as quick!

DH had one once in a 'proper' Indian restaurant in Caerphilly. Menu described the dish as 'fruity'. Turned out they'd just emptied an entire tin of fruit salad into it.
