To put my hair in bunches?

I've recently grown my hair out after years of having it short, and it's finally got to a long enough length to tie it back. I tried a ponytail but it won't stay in so I put it in bunches. A couple of people have said to me that only girls have bunches made me feel a bit Sad. I know I'm 40 but is it really that bad?

I'm nearly 38.

Have long hair and still wear them in 2 low plaits.

Hair is to long and thick for bunches but if i'd straightened it I might do.

diddl · 03/05/2013 13:23

Wear your hair how you want OP.

Friend of mine had her hair in bunches recently-tied with bobbles/go-gos??

She looked fab.

She's 50.

I wear low bunches sometimes.
People at the door sometimes ask if my mother is home.
I care not.

Bunches are totally appropriate in a 40 yr old woman. It's just that not everyone gets away with it. YOU DO.

Kasterborous · 03/05/2013 14:09

A couple of people have said they make me look younger too. Maybe it's because my wrinkles have been pulled tighter. Also I am only the same height as a ten year old girl at 4ft10in.

i think you're fibbing about the low bunches, OP Wink

Lulabellarama · 03/05/2013 14:13

Dear god, I can't believe the number of people who have an actual opinion as to how other women should wear their hair. Do whatever you want.

I am 31 I used to wear my hair in low bunches at the back hopped up and back through iyswim? Makes it look less little girlish I think?

ParadiseChick · 03/05/2013 14:25

I wear bunches, pony tails, knots - what ever I want!

thermalsinapril · 03/05/2013 14:33

I think bunches look daft on anyone over 12.

ParadiseChick · 03/05/2013 14:43

Do you actually give a shit? That's a bit sad really.

WildlingPrincess · 03/05/2013 14:50

My friend still wears bunches when we go out. We're all goths mind. I say, go for it!

Bunches on women older than their very early twenties look ridiculous. Just dreadful.

badguider · 03/05/2013 17:00

I wouldn't wear them to work or a wedding or evening do, but for daytime, sport, yoga, housework, dog walking or a casual pub lunch I don't see the issue. It's a very casual style but so what?

ENormaSnob · 03/05/2013 17:06

I think they look ridiculous on adults tbh.

But, if you like them then that's what matters surely?

snuffaluffagus · 03/05/2013 17:09

I do it occasionally! (I'm 32) I have fairly long hair and wear them fairly low and far back, like the first three pics here (not like Britney, ehem) -

WHO makes the rules that a certain way of tying your hair back should stop at a certain age? Hogwash.

SanityClause · 03/05/2013 17:13

It's only fashion that dictates that bunches are for little girls.

I, for example, have short hair. In Victorian times, my hair would've been deemed suitable only for a man. I would've seemed eccentric in the extreme.

In 100 years, who is to say women won't be wearing bunches as a formal hairstyle suitable for the office?

If you like them, wear them. You might start a fashion! Wink

freddiefrog · 03/05/2013 17:18

I wear bunches sometimes.

I have longer hair so twist them a bit like the first pic here

Or messy fishtail braids

No one has ever commented on them

ParadiseChick · 03/05/2013 20:18

Freddie that's like mine Grin
