to want someone to design a pram frame for larger car seats?

DS has just grown out of his travel system.

I do not drive (for medical reasons) so use a lot of taxis. While we had the travel system that was fine. I could simply click the car seat into the frame and get on with my day.

Now I have to bring the pram with a seat on it and then bring the car seat with me too. Easier said than done.

No where can I find a system designed to take a larger car seat. If I ask people look at me as if I'm mad. One shop assistant even told me to leave the car seat in the car - not so simple when you dont have one.

I know that I'm probably one of a significant minority who does not drive but does use a lot of taxis but I can not be the only one. AIBU?

The orbit takes a next stage car seat. May still be US only though

Mine grew out by 7m (too tall, though not too heavy) so we had to find a suitable RF solution.

My DD outgrew her first car seat at 8 months and we moved her to ERF. She's 99th centile for height & weight. My friend's 16 month old still fits in the same seat and will do for several months yet as she's a petite wee thing.

i dont often sit in a car seat, but i imagine a buggy wouldn't be as comfortable as a sofa either. very few seats are tbh.

i know my infant carrier was for up to 10kg although i have no clue what age that would be for most dcs. my dcs are quite slight wee things and ds2 at age 4 is 15kg.

Are you saying that you carry two carseats? (the travel system one and the big one?). Because that is a bit stupid.

No, I love buggies.

I dislike car seats on wheels though. They have their uses, but "driving to the Trafford Centre then shopping for hours" isn't a good use.

what do you suggest visualise if OP wants her Ds to be safe in taxis but also transportable once out of the taxi?

yes she could leave the infant carrier at home and just put the baby in the seat part of the pushchair but it doesn't mean less carrying for her as she still needs the big car seat for the taxi.

i'm still sure this can be done. it really couldn't be that out of the realms of possibility to design travelsystems so they can take the second stage car seats. i mean travelsystems themselves only came about in recent years (10?) so i think it's only a matter of time before they invent the newest kind.

Upthread someone mentioned taxis that carry car seats. I think that's absolutely the best solution all round - properly fitted car seat that OP doesn't have to lug around with her, so she can use a buggy that best fits her and DS's needs.

I really wish someone would invent one too op. we don't drive either but having a travel system made going away anywhere a lot easier if we were going to need taxi's.

Why not just put the baby in the buggy bit of the travel system, can't see why she's putting him in the travel system car seat if he's actually too big for it to be used safely in a car any way?

Agree that it's a pain to carry a carseat that it big enough and doesn't fit the system, but why take the smaller one??

Horry Do you have any links to research? Only I have heard this mentioned several times (including by my health visitor) but nobody has ever actually produced any research, and I've been unable to find any myself. If you can point me in the right direction, I would be very grateful.

DoJo - there have been cases of babies dying when strapped into their car seats because their chin is often tucked into their chest so breathing is restricted.

Sorry DoJo I looked into it five years ago when expecting DC1 and was thoroughly frightened into doing things "properly", so I don't still have any links now.

I also learned about "internal decapitation" which put me on to rear-facing beyond the infant carrier. Do Not Google.

I kept DS in his infant seat until 18 months for just this reason! Unfortunately his head was at the top of the seat by then.

Depending on the situation since then, we have sometimes lugged the big seat with us, sometimes used the taxis (very battered) seat, and since 2ish sometimes used a trunki booster seat. None of those options are entirely satisfactory though.

Sorry I was perhaps not clear in my OP.

When I say the pram with a seat I mean the seat that goes with the travel system not the car seat itself as that would just be silly.

DS is 99th centile for weight and height and the top of his head is over the top of the infant car seat

I found the Orbit sadly it is only US. Its expensive too even if I can manage to get one over here. Good to know that someone has actually designed one though even if I can't get hold of it. I'm goign to look at the rest of the options in a bit.

I use a Kiddy Energy Pro which is light but safe portable - ish car seat for 9mths - 4 yrs.

Alot of taxi company's are stopping providing their own child seats, so better to have your own. I did keep my carseat at a taxi company but it was broken next time I used it suggesting they'd either used it themselves or dropped it / stored it where it could be damaged... Not exactly a safe option.

I also went through all the options out there when ds got too big for his first car seat. It's a nightmare really!

I was really tempted to try and get an orbit when DS1 was a bit smaller - am very glad he's coming up to the magic age of 4 where I can put him in a booster without too much guilt!

We travel a lot so had to use taxis a fair bit when he was smaller and we found a car seat (admittedly an american one as we're not in UK but in case it's useful if was an Evenflo Triumph) that "fits" (though of course wasn't meant to!) on the seat of our bugaboo bee and we then strapped it on with an adjustable luggage strap and strapped DS into the car seat - maybe not the safest option for when he's been pushed around in the pushchair (though I was pretty sure it couldn't fall off) but I figured he was more at risk of serious harm in the car than when walking around (and if he fell off he'd still be strapped into the car seat!). It did make the buggy a bit bulky and we got some strange looks but it worked for us better than not having a proper car seat in the car on the way there.

I feel your pain though - I spent so long looking for one when DS outgrew his infant carrier - i'm sure they're going to become standard one day!

this has both a baby car seat attachment, toddler car seat attachment and a normal buggy attachment plus it turns 360 for ease of access when in cars etc.
