Dh has a cold sore. He didn't think it was a cold sore as its in the corner of his mouth and he very rarely gets them, he just thought it was a cracked lip.
Dd age 6 now has a cold sore. Packed dh off to chemist to get Zovirax cream for them both.
Apparently dd needs to see the gp to find out why she has a cold sore. Clearly I'm not a medical professional, but it's bloody patently obvious to me why she has a cold sore, ie her father has one live at the moment and almost certainly has kissed her goodnight more than once before he realised that he has a cold sore. Surely I don't need to waste a gp appointment and take a perfectly fit and healthy child out of school to tell me something that anyone with an ounce of sense would be able to work out for themselves.
Granted if she was getting them repeatedly then I agree it would warrant a gp visit but really? One cold sore and she needs the doctor?

No that's really silly! Definitely no GP appt warranted.

I do tend to agree it's a waste of time, but maybe when children get them for the first time they need to check them out?? .

Why not phone the surgery and see what they say?

don't worry about it. dd gets conjunctivitis (?), she has to sneeze and she gets it. i wandered to a pharmacy on a Sunday and get some eye drops to be told that i needed to see a doctor as it might not be conjunctivitis. (dd wasnt with me at the time).

Pharmacist didnt seem to get that dd has had it about 3 times a year since she was born. I wasn't gonna waste an ood's time on a sunday just to confirm what i already knew. and didn't want to take the day of work on monday to sort it when i can deal with it at home.

Don't worry about it, maybe (if you remember) next time she has to go to the docs just mention it.

I second calling the surgery - just ask them if an appointment is really necessary in the circs.

Can they be dangerous? Is ir advised not to use Zovirax on a yound chils?
But I do agree it seems a bit OTT. Tea tree ointment, Vit B complex Vit C and Zinc should help but may cost more then a gp visit

You don't have to make an appointment for during school time.

Cracked lips at the place where the lips meet in the corner can be a sign of coeliac disease vitamin deficiency, or bacterial or viral infection, it was my sister's main symptom of coeliac, along with mouth ulcers. Also kids are usually quite ill with their first 'dose' of the herpes virus. So I don't think it would be unreasonable to not assume it is a cold sore. Cold sores are usually on a lip or skin near the lip rather than at the apex.

Yanbu. And she may get them repeatedly now, unfortunately. Once you have the virus it doesn't go away, they just pop up every now and then. So even then a GP visit would be a complete waste of time imo.

The Herpes simplex virus can be dangerous in children and they need to check her out and prescribe the right cream.

Ok well I suppose I'd better attempt to make her an appointment.
Of course it will be at least 2 weeks from now by which time the cold sore will have gone,

Do you have a minor illness nurse at your surgery. We do and you get to speak to her on the phone before getting an appointment, often the appointment will be with her. Advantage of getting a GP appointment is that medication will be free on prescription.
