To think my MIL really is a bit odd?

I was in PIL's house, talking to MIL. During our conversation, she kept getting up to peer out of the window. Then I heard a car pull up and she ran to the window. She turned to me, clapped her hands and cried, "That's my baby!" And then she did a little skip!
I was totally confused. I looked out of the window, (obviously) to see 65 year old FIL walking up the path. By this time MIL was running for the front door. FIL was not returning from the war, he was coming home from work. He's semi-retired. It was 2pm and he'd been at work since 9am. FIL certainly does not behave like this. So go on, tell me IABU, that this is romantic and you'd do the same after 40 years of marriage. I think she's crackers.

I think that's kind of cute if a bit OTT. Sorry, it's a YABU from me.

Was she high?

seeker · 30/04/2013 15:24

Yet a another example of a MIL being unable to win!

I'm laughing at the excess enthusiasm, but I think it's actually really sweet. YABU

gail734 · 30/04/2013 15:28

Oh, go on, the lot of you! She's bonkers! Calling him "my baby" especially!

musickeepsmesane · 30/04/2013 15:29

I always check MIL threads in case I have freaked my DDIL out. Grin Might give this a go. YABU. I fully intend to skip everywhere from now on though DH may leave me

musickeepsmesane · 30/04/2013 15:30

yeah, she is a tiny little bit bonkers, in a good way Wink

zoobaby · 30/04/2013 15:30

Maybe she was pleased that he'd come home to rescue her from you? Grin (joke)

MaxPepsi · 30/04/2013 15:30

No, she just loves her husband.

Or she knew he had a new diamond ring in his pocket/was bringing her favourite lunch and was starving/got her a new puppy.

gail734 · 30/04/2013 15:32

No, musickeepsmesane, surely your DH would love it if you threw the door open and jumped into his arms as if you hadn't seen him for a year?

SoniaGluck · 30/04/2013 15:32

I think YABU. It's nice to think some people still feel like that after x years of marriage.

It's a hell of a lot better than PIL sniping at each other.

WilsonFrickett · 30/04/2013 15:32

Oh that is cute! I'm not sure I have ever been able to muster up a skip for DH unless he had chips and wine

cornyderpy · 30/04/2013 15:33

aw I think that's really nice

mrsminiverscharlady · 30/04/2013 15:33

If my MIL did that I would assume she'd got some form of early dementia. I cannot tell you how far outside her normal character that behaviour would be!

ScrambledSmegs · 30/04/2013 15:34

Yes, a little odd. But in a really sweet way :)

Come on, isn't it actually rather lovely that she clearly still adores him after 40 years of marriage? I would love to know what their secret is.

PanpiperAtTheGatesOfYawn · 30/04/2013 15:34

gail, have you considered how much SEX they must be having to still have this kind of relationship?

MWAH HA HA!

ShatnersBassoon · 30/04/2013 15:35

It is a bit odd, but in a totally harmless and quite cute way.

I wish DH dashed for the door when I arrived home, instead of dashing and trying to do the job he was supposed to have done in my absence in the time it takes me to get from the car to the door.

NotSoNervous · 30/04/2013 15:36

Okay I think YABU but I do think its abit OTT

gail734 · 30/04/2013 15:36

zoobaby Even before he turned up, I was getting a bit annoyed by the window-watching. I was thinking, whoever she's expecting must be pretty damned interesting! Then that old duffer arrived!

MaxPepsi I get that she loves her husband, but I've never seen anybody love their husband that much, ever, in real life! I've been to plenty of weddings at which the couple weren't that demonstrative.

Grin Panpiper

I think it's sweet too.

SoniaGluck · 30/04/2013 15:38

Oh, and what seeker said.

God help me when I become a MIL. I'm going to be afraid to open my mouth, or not open my mouth. Or offer to help, or not offer to help. Or ask what the grandchildren would like for Christmas/birthday presents, or not...etc.,etc. Hmm

gail734 · 30/04/2013 15:42

OK, Panpiper thanks for that image. Mrsminivers I can only compare this to my own mother, who before her death had been married to my DF for 30 years. They always danced together at weddings and that was the only time I ever saw them being romantic. All joking aside, when MIL clapped and skipped, I thought "That's it, she's finally lost it." My second thought was, "Have you been at the sherry?"

diddl · 30/04/2013 15:43

Well it's kind of cute-but imo massively rude to keep getting up & looking out of the window when you have a visitor.

I guess you're not that interesting, OPGrin

PanpiperAtTheGatesOfYawn · 30/04/2013 15:43

My pleasure Gail. Grin

My work here is done!

mrsjay · 30/04/2013 15:43

I think that's kind of cute if a bit OTT. Sorry, it's a YABU from me.

Was she high?

that made me laugh

op I think it is nice she still loves him after how ever many years together maybe a bit ott but stil nice, what did she really do that was so wrong, did her love for her husband embarrass you ?
