Have been quoted £450 from some solicitors in town to do wills for me and husband. Then there's VAT on top, so altogether nearly £550!

AIBU to think this is rediculously expensive? Are the will packs from Smiths any good?

We did Willaid too.

We used WillAid. (Twice as we redid our wills). It was great and we still got the same service as we would have if we had been normal paying customers.

We paid the suggested rate very happily.

WillAid takes place in November (maybe October??)

If you belong to a union you can get one drawn up for free/cheapness.

Join a union! you should do this anyway anyone that works, and also there is a community union being set up by GMB maybe, not sure, for the unwaged.

Advice on choosing a Will Writer

LadyIsabellaWrotham · 30/04/2013 23:28

I used WH Smiths mirror wills, and had them checked over by my parents' solicitors who reluctantly agreed that actually they was fine.

BUT

Our affairs are unbelievably simple.

AND

I am legally trained and know what I'm doing.

IMO if you are confident about paperwork and know your way around a clause then those will packs are a lot better than nothing (and a lot of people have nothing) but a professional is always a valuable precaution. (Apart from anything else, if they do screw up your heirs can sue against their insurance).

I forgot to come back to this thread to say that Mumblechum1's firm www.marlowwills.co.uk did our wills in the end and we were really pleased with the professional service. And the fee was only a third of what our usual solicitors were going to charge! So Flowers Mumblechum!

I used a cancer charity one - didn't cost me anything but £100 will be donated when I peg it. It was done through a solicitor.

You're very welcome Blue Hyacinth!

We are also on the Remember A Charity scheme, by the way.
