To hate my neighbours chickens and don't think they should be allowed

In semi-detached council houses? [both private and council houses on the street)

Rats love the chicken food. I have them in our garden and we actually see them coming from her chicken hut into our garden and we have to pay to get them dealt with when they decide to live in our garden as well. There is nothing in our garden attracting them except for easy access to the chickens.

They are also noisy horrible things first thing in the morning and they are right under my bloody window and they make their stupid noises all bloody day long.

The council says there is nothing they can do about it basically. It should be against their bloody rules!! The neighbour is aware of the rats but she doesn't care.

Grumpy because one rat just stared me out as bold as anything.

There's rats running outside our house as we live off a high street with fast food places and people drop food and litter. Fuckers. I'd prefer chickens.

cantspel · 22/04/2013 14:21

cats tend to only catch the smaller baby rats or old sick ones and will leave the larger adult rats well alone.

ppeatfruit · 22/04/2013 14:38

YABU We had rats under our floorboards in a Nth London house with no chickens anywhere. As Ivykaty said they're everywhere at least they're not in your house.

Our neighbours 3 houses down have chickens and cockerels (We love the morning noise and the eggs!)ducks, guinea fowl, ferrets, etc. Probably rats too but I haven't seen any. We are in rural France though!

I'm not sure I understand the paranoia about rats. Humans carry more diseases than rats and you're more likely to share a railway carriage with a human!

Sallystyle · 22/04/2013 14:39

I have a Jack Russell. She doesn't kill the rats Hmm

They have to be trained to kill rats samu

Igo2work4Arest · 22/04/2013 14:41

I was going to say get a dog or a cat that should be enough to keep any rats away from your garden, rats hate dogs and cats. That is why I have a jack russel and a moggy so we don't have a problem with vermin, I live in a rural area with neighbours who keep chickens admittedly we have big gardens and her chickens are quite a way from my house but still touch wood we occasionally have one left in the garage or one was left on the snow by the dog or cat but we have never seen a live one scurrying about..... yuck I hate rats I really feel for you and I think the council do have a responsibility to approach your neigbours to do something.

Sallystyle · 22/04/2013 14:42

I am not concerned about the diseases really, It more the damage they can do to my lovely garden.

I love rats, have three pet ones myself but I don't want them in my garden.

I will call EH again. They did make us pay before, I think that is was pisses me off more, not so much the rats or the chickens, but the neighbour not caring.

Have you checked the terms of your lease? we bought an ex council semi and one of the covenants is that we don't keep birds. I wpuld imagine thrre's something similar in the leases of the other residents who are council tenants. Might be worth checking.

Although whether you want a showdown with yr neighboyrs is another issue.

Sallystyle · 22/04/2013 14:44

ppeat I still hoped that she would at least scare them off just being there Grin

They don't even hide much, one just sat there with a 'WTF are you going to do about it?' look

My mum kept Quails and she lived in an ex-council semi, I hated the bloody things and they STANK!. I don't understand the appeal of having what is essentially livestock near your home, but each to their own. I don't think YABU, especially if you have rats creeping around your garden

ppeatfruit · 22/04/2013 14:55

Samu Does she sniff about where they've been? Rats are definitely getting more brazen (I love Jack Russells). I'm glad you won't poison the rats Grin

MummytoMog · 22/04/2013 15:04

YABU. We have chickens and they're far less annoying than our cats are. At least the chickens don't poo in the neighbours' flower beds.

fluffyraggies · 22/04/2013 15:17

We live rurally, big barn next door to us, stables 3 houses down, a river behind us, and we never saw a single rat until our new neighbours took up feeding wild birds with ginormouse amounts of food. Fat balls, nuts, crusts, seeds, all scattered about the place.

Rats would come and go across our garden to get to hers.

When the neighbours moved - we stopped seeing the rats.

ppeatfruit · 22/04/2013 15:53

Oh dear I feed the wild birds Blush I haven't seen any rats though. Our chicken lady's grandson keeps hunting Jack Russells who also come and eat the food too though, maybe they frighten the rats.

I am an animal lover, however I am hating my neighbours having chickens. If we were in more enclosed gardens it would not be too much of a bother! However we are a row of terraced houses, our gardens are terraced due to the steepness of them meaning we all have full view of each others gardens and the separating walls are original with the house and are only 2 ft high and the gardens are not overly large. My neighbours did not consult us about getting chickens and we did not know until we saw the finished construction in their garden. The whole structure has been built right up against our property covered in chicken wire and is about 15 x 15 ft. They originally had 4 chickens but recently doubled to 8, this has increased in noise, smell and seagulls are beginning to be attracted. These neighbours are not overly friendly and are difficult to approach. I phoned EH who's aid there is little we can do but keep a 3 week diary, so great eh? Any advice?

sukimistybella · 25/04/2013 10:56

Forgot to state we live on the edge of town in a heavily residential area, is this realistically the best place to keep chickens?

mrdarcy005 · 10/08/2018 06:26

i agree my next door but one got 4 chickens and cock i dont mind the chickens but 5 and 6 o clock onwards. Broken down sleep patterns im not having it they run a cresh for kids. I want to ring its neck lol
