to hope the government has the guts to tax WEALTHY pensioners more

The Fabian society has suggested that wealthy pensioners pay more tax.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-22220345

Some how I can't see a conservative wanting to tax wealthy pensioners more when they all vote Tory.

I find it unfair that pensioners with an income more the average family's income get free bus buses, winter fuel allowance, TV licence as well as paying less tax and national insurance. It is about time that the the wealthy pensioners took their share of the pain of the cuts.

I am in favour of well off pensioners having free bus passes, winter fuel allowance as these things encourage independence and improve health. I would like to see the money for these things clawed back by WEALTHY pensioners paying more income tax.

Because you Keep going on about Women pensioners who haven't worked as many years as you, as if that's something to aspire to, without any acknowledgement that many of those women would have loved the opportunity of a decent career and the availability of childcare. Many of them are now either poor, or living vicariously off their husbands pension and hoping he outlives them.

janey68 · 24/04/2013 18:32

(that was in reply to square pebbles question to me)

Squarepebbles · 24/04/2013 18:37

Sorry that doesn't explain you accusing me of disliking work I assume because I've had 5 years off.

Plenty of women loved being sahp and some worked, not as many as now because more didn't have to.

Plenty of women who didn't work are very comfortable and it's been made clear countless times that nobody is referring to poor struggling pensions- women or men.

Springdiva · 24/04/2013 18:50

Plenty of women loved being sahp and some worked, not as many as now because more didn't have to

because more didn't have to??? Because more didn't have the opportunity more like. Remember they'd given up work when they married as that was what was the rule. Remember the jobs were kept for men after the war. So having given up because you have to and not returning because you didn't do that in those days, very few worked. My mother's generation. Remember employees won't' go out looking for workers if the accepted social norm is that women run the home.
My generation most women went back to work or retraining after DCs went to school.

Plenty of women who didn't work are very comfortable well, many women who didn't work are very comfortable compared to their previous life when they scraped by on a husband's wage, ime no car, no holidays except to relatives, rented house or high mortgage, just enough to manage the bills. So now, if they have social housing or own home and just paying for themselves are, compared to their past, doing well.

Squarepebbles · 24/04/2013 18:55

Spring I thought we were talking about wealthy pensioners?

So absolutely no pensioner should give up their benefits or contribute towards reducing the debt-none,not a single one?

FasterStronger · 24/04/2013 19:00

square from what you said earlier in response to another poster, i understood that your DH had increased his pension payments so you still received CB.

do you still receive CB?

Squarepebbles · 24/04/2013 19:02

No that was George.

janey68 · 24/04/2013 19:02

How are these women who didn't work, or worked very part time, well off? You don't have a good pension unless you've worked!!

jacks365 · 24/04/2013 19:02

While i agree that wealthy pensioners do not need wfa or free bus passes or free tv licences after 75 they are very small costs £ 200 a year each or so. The reason they are universal is because that is the most cost effective way of ensuring those who need get. It would cost more than it saves to target them to the needy.

handcream · 24/04/2013 19:05

I know I will be classed as a 'wealthy' pensioner Square because I didnt take a career break or went part time. I will hopefully just have the one DH!

So would you take my benefits off me and give them to others because they have chosen not to work (for however long).

FasterStronger · 24/04/2013 19:05

square, so why doesnt your DH do that then?

janey68 · 24/04/2013 19:06

I think some posters would rather these things were means tested even though it costs more than making them universal, just out of sheer resentment at pensioners.

handcream · 24/04/2013 19:08

Yes, I would be very interested to find these women who havent worked and are comfortably off...

Unless they married a rich man and are still with him...

Squarepebbles · 24/04/2013 19:08

Errrrm if oh have a savvy wealthy husband you'll have a shed load of investments in your name,if your husband has a stonking great pension you'll be enjoying that ( unless you're being made to live in the shed).

If your husband has died and left you poor you aren't the pensioners we're talking about.

handcream · 24/04/2013 19:10

I am staggered at some people's view on this thread. The less you put in the more you get back.

If you put loads in then give it to the people that have taken a career break or havent bothered to work at all!

Squarepebbles · 24/04/2013 19:12

Faster can't afford it.

You have to sacrifice a lot more than you receive in CB to get the same back.

He gets a small bonus yearly if so we're continuing to claim but will hand the bonus back to pay it or something like that- great incentive to work hard(not).

To be honest I think they'll close the loophole anyway and all CB will go if they get back in.

handcream · 24/04/2013 19:13

Come on Square. I am a high earner in my own right. Would you take the bus pass (which I will not use) or the WFA from me and give to others that havent contributed as much.

What about taking the state pension off me too, after all I have a private pension. Give it to someone more deserving perhaps....

Squarepebbles · 24/04/2013 19:16

So Janey obviously you think universal CB should come back then as it is saving buggar all which is sad as in real terms it makes a difference to families.

Squarepebbles · 24/04/2013 19:18

Hand no I'd be getting rid of it for high earners as it isn't needed.

handcream · 24/04/2013 19:18

Its actually an interesting point that Square has made.

'Cannot afford it'. Its all depends what your outgoings are.. Do you think Sky TV and a mobile is an essential, what about an annual holiday to relieve the stress, what about smoking, nights out (because of course you need that ocasional treat).

What about how many children you choose to have, all of these are under our control. However this forum (not just this thread) often indicates its not under our control and despite the crap decisions some make its not really their fault and actually - we should help them with benefits and such like...Dont ever dare to state that a mobile is not an essential or even that the odd trip to a nail bar isnt allowed too...

handcream · 24/04/2013 19:20

But I havent just become a high earner by accident...... Ok, maybe I just need to make the cheque payable to you now.....

Who are you to say that it isnt needed or earned. I will have paid stacks into the system to fund people who choose to stay at home - like you for instance....

Squarepebbles · 24/04/2013 19:22

We don't have Sky,we have a Tesco payg £10, we never go out,we camp,1 battered car,dp cycles to work......

Squarepebbles · 24/04/2013 19:24

No my dp is funding my 5 years and I did/will.

So pensioners who retire early, never worked- are you funding them?

jacks365 · 24/04/2013 19:28

Square i really can't understand where your money is going then. You should be doing well financially but you obviously aren't so where is it being spent

handcream · 24/04/2013 19:29

I am not sure what you are getting at Square. The fact is that the less you earn the less you can afford. You have chosen to stay at home. I dont see why I should fund your decision.
