Been in a lot of pain, not like normal period pain but sharp gnawing vile pain since Tuesday night. Went to GP on Thurs, he felt my abdomen and said my uterus felt enlarged but couldnt give me an internal examination (no chaperone at that time) and said it could be a)my coil has slipped down or b)fibroids or c) something else. So he recommended I went to my family planning clinic that evening. I did but there was no doctor there that evening so couldnt be examined or have coil removed or whatever. To cut a long story short the pain is still there getting worse by the moment and I am on my second period of this month and passing very brown stringy/clotty blood.
Im in two minds whether to go to A&E tonight but im worried its wrong to do so? Please be gentle with me im in agony

Call OOH, get seen by them, and have them refer you to the on-call gynae team at the hospital. They will then see you in A&E (the triage nurse will bleep them), and this will save you sitting in a very long queue to see a junior doc in A&E, who will more than likely either refer you to gynae anyway (more waiting) or send you back to your GP on Monday. Seriously, I know what I'm on about!

Oh, and no doc I know will do any kind of intimate examination on anyone, male or female, without an appropriate chaperone. They're protecting themselves, not you!

I had a male GP check my coil strings about a year ago. He asked if I wanted a nurse in there but I said no.

Agree with feather, call OOH GP and get an appointment. If you need to be seen they can arrange to send you straight up to gynae ward (or send them down to review you in A&E), no waiting about with the drunks and malingerers.

Disagree about the exam though, I've had a pelvic exam from a (female) GP without a chaperone and many of our OOH doctors will perform them if required. More likely to send you up to gynae, however.

Have yoy done a pg test?

I had 2 'periods' and awful pain with my ectopic.

Not saying that's your situation obviously, but ypur body is telling you something's wrong. Good luck.

Why didn't you go back to the gp or family planning on Friday?

Ill probably get flamed for this but unless the pain has got worse since you saw the gp I'd say its not an a&e case. It's not an accident and if you've been coping since Tues and saw a dr on Thurs who wasn't worried then its not an emergency.

Obviously I'm in a minority. Smile

Mmm, I'd have been ringing the gp on Friday and asking if there was a nurse about to be a chaperone.

I'd go to a&e. My coil slip down out of place once so it was partly poking through my cervix. Couldn't be seen or felt through an internal exam, but an ultrasound confirmed it's position. Because it was irritating my cervix I was getting awful contraction like pains and hot and cold flushes. These got worse over a couple of days and I went to the dr's twice before they referred me to the hospital for an appointment later that day. By that point had it been a weekend I couldn't have waited till the dr's reopened on Monday so I would have gone to A&E.

Even if it is not this or fibroids having the coil does put you at higher risk of developing a pelvic infection. I think you have a valid reason for going, but agree with others get up there now! before the drunks start pouring in.

I agree - start with OOH GP. Some give you an appointment, others you have to queue but the queue is generally shorter than A&E.

Had to go with dd this am - she woke with a temp and "hurting wee wee" and UTIs can be really serious with toddlers. The wait was the same as the time it took me to read one Charlie and Lola book so I was amazed!

I wouldn't go to A&E for this, it wouldn't even occur to me to.

A&E will be hell on a Saturday night, as featherbag said you could end up waiting in a massive queue to even be assessed. Try 111? They vary in usefulness depending on where you live, but should be able to tell you whether you should be going to a walk in centre, out of hours GP or A&E.

And ooh dr can do internals. I also had my coil half in, half out for hours with agonising cramps. I went to OOH and the dr there took it out with the receptionist as chaperone.

I'd go there if in pain.

I'm an A+E nurse and you should deffo go! The fact that you've already been to the GP's speaks volumes to me.

I'm sure it will be busy with alcohol fuelled people that have been basking in the sun!

A&E.

I was blue lighted with agonising stomach cramps which turned out to be a crippling womb infection caused by my coil. I remember the ambulance bods telling me its very common and they 'bloody hate coils' but that it is a valid reason to go to a&E

I called OOH with a half rejected coil which started on a Saturday - I knew what it was because it had happened before...

I was told they could not do examinations and advised I went to A&E... I wouldn't so I suffered another 48hrs by which time I was vomiting with the pain...

If OP has been coping with this since earlier this week and is now bleeding then there is NO WAY she can wait until Monday. Go to A&E.

Well I went last night had a minimal wait. They were very good doc said she could see I was in lots of pain and took it very seriously. The upshot is they think it's a cyst that's burst as I have polycystic ovaries as the pain and bleeding would be consistent with this. So although they haven't actually been able to do anything its good to know it's nothing immediately serious

Ouch poor you! I know someone who that happened to and they said it was worse pain than having a baby. Glad you got seen. Hope you feel better soon w
