AIBU?

To find this sexist but I can't articulate why

Probably because I have baby brain and had no sleep and my mind is mush.

But Morrissey recently said that because of Thatcher (sorry, I know) there will never be another female prime minister. And that struck me as sexist. No one would ever say that after an unpopular male PM. But I can't really articulate further than that - does anyone agree, though?

He comes out with this kind of crap quite regularly, always has. I recall an interview him in his "Meat is Murder" days, explaining that the fact he was wearing leather shoes was because "there was no real alternative". Yep, right, so you're a murderer then? Wouldn't you rather go barefoot?

But yes - this is sexist. If someone said this about someone black, as if that was their one defining factor, then it would be spotted instantly as racist. Its weird how it is less obvious when it's about women.

I would like to hope that they majority of the general public will not generalise all women leaders as being like Thatcher. I mean how many male prime ministers have messed up?

Morrissey is a knob. I never pay any attention to the drivel he spouts.

But yes, it was sexist. And stupid.

Thank you. I knew some of you on here would be able to put it better than me. Unfortunately I've seen this reposted a few times on social media and people seem to be giving it credibility - it really got on my wick but I couldn't put my finger on why, now I can.

Yes, it's the old idea that women are women, but men are people.

Hmm

Try it with the joke gambit: "A (wo)man goes into a bar..." With the female protagonist, it's instantly narrower what the joke can/will be about. If the character is a man, the listener will wait longer for the setup.
