Feeling quite nostalgic about the days of "Mrs Thatch, Mrs Thatch"

Maybe this isn't a great time to start this thread being as the funeral has not yet taken place but I feel quite nostalgic about the days of MT. I was a teenager when she came to power so grew up with all the various left wing and very "right on" comedians of the time. Ben Elton in his sparkly suit, Harry Enfield as Loadsamoney, The Young Ones etc. We had fabulous comedy from Spitting Image etc....because we had SOMETHING to rebel against! What do today's generation have? A load of grey suits.....

Whether people loved MT or hated her she inspired loads of people to write comedy, music and TV. That Spitting Image puppet used to have me in stitches ....a friend of mine (won't name names), has the Spitting Image puppet which was made of him.....it's looking a bit battered these days but what a hell of a dinner party conversation piece!

What makes me laugh more than anything, is that all the various "right on" comics of the time have all morphed into champagne socialists , they are positively "country squire" some of them.

So that's what I shall remember of Mrs T, NOT all the politics especially as I was quite a young teenager when she came to power, but all the response she got, all the rebellion and all the music and comedy her policies inspired.

Ah all nostalgic..

There was a piece in The Times today about the amount of 'art' she inspired; Scarfe the cartoonist, Caryl Chruchill's play "Top Girls", the Spitting image caricature etc...

Guess we don't get satire/inspiration like that amymore. "Call Me Dave" isn't in the same league.

I think also Billy Bragg said he was nothing until he found her...

I'm wondering, given the current climate, how bad things have to get before the comedians start getting funny again?

George Osborne is surely inspirational as a comedy figure. I might right something about him......

oh yes. Saturday Night Live and Ben Elton. Great back in the day...shame they all sold out! I think, as a country, we have become so detatched from politics those days may well be over. Cameron may turn the tide back though, and not in a good way .

It was a very political time I miss that. Have been watching Drop The Dead Donkey it's just before she is kicked out comedy was great the had a lot to work with

Was just thinking that today's lot wouldn't be out of place in The Beano! Dave Cameron as Lord Snooty with Boris as Dennis the Menace, Theresa May as Minnie the Minx ....heaven alone knows who Nick Clegg would be.

Actually, I think there is more to rebel against now. I'd like to chat to the protestors and ask them to put their energies into modern day protests against people who have actually power now, rather than rebelling against a frail old lady who has had no real power for 20 years.

There's plenty to rebel against.

Charlie's brooker certainly thinks he's very funny. There was a right on prog a year or so ago with the equally hilarious (yawn) david Mitchell. It might have appealed to the yoof.
