I only ask as have gotten used to it on news oriented sites so automatically am primed to look for a Recommend button for the numerous comments on Mumsnet which I have found useful / informative / heartfelt whatever, just some way of indicating my appreciation of the effort made.

I don't know, what would happen if you click it?

Is it similar to the Facebook recommend button that we already have?

usualsuspect · 12/04/2013 22:29

Recommend where?

DeepRedBetty · 12/04/2013 22:34

I think OP means the sort of button that 'likes' that particular post on a thread, because it's either very funny or very helpful (and sometimes both!). I'm used to it on newspaper site forums too, and have wanted to show my appreciation of something particularly insightful or that had me snorting my wine tea over the keyboard.

I'd also love a way to reply directly to a particular post, another available option that's certainly available on the Telegraph site - although I can see its downsides as well.

UhOhChongo · 12/04/2013 22:48

That's it DeepRedBettty I read a great comment on here and I'd like to acknowledge it somehow. I accept the downside could be a skewing of posts to seek out recommends, but your average discerning mumsnetter would see beyond that...Hmm

this has come up many times before and the consensus is that the status quo remains: if you like a post then say so.

eg

uhOhCHongo posts 'Great post 531' Grin

because it's a talk board y'see

lougle · 12/04/2013 22:52

You're trying to upcycle a like button, aren't you? I can see the cogs turning 'A like button wouldn't get through, but a 'recommend' button might just....'

great post, Lougle

usualsuspect · 12/04/2013 23:06

5318008 didn't know it had come up before. Fair enough, if the consensus is a no. FWIW am not a Facebooker, not my scene, just have gotten used to the news comment pages like Guardian CIF where it is v easy to acknowledge interesting posts.

hmmm still more work needed

thermalsinapril · 12/04/2013 23:55

Noooooooo, I don't want to feel compelled to go through every thread I need voting! I'd have to vote on every comment for the sake of fairness!

thermalsinapril · 12/04/2013 23:56

read not need!

usualsuspect · 12/04/2013 23:59

I would only up vote pictures of kittens.

HoppinMad · 13/04/2013 00:47

Hmm the up and down arrows like on the Daily fail website comments. Not that I read that trash of course, oh no..

Toadinthehole · 13/04/2013 06:47

YABU.

It discourages decent comment in favour of witty asides. Please Mumsnet, don't ever do it!

DolomitesDonkey · 13/04/2013 06:52

Yabu, we already have 53 threads a week entitled "whose gang do you want to join the most?" Which also had a Twitter spin-off series.

DeskPlanner · 13/04/2013 07:33

I'd also vote no.

ModernToss · 13/04/2013 07:48

A no from me too.
