Is £40 to put a child's hair in a bun too expensive?

I asked my regular hairdresser if she could do DD1s hair for her 1st communion, we have to be at the church for 9am so I asked her if she could come round at 8am to give her enough time etc she said 8.30 but I thought this would be pushing it a bit. She said that's fine and it would be £40 and is that ok with me?

I was thinking £25-30 max £40 seems a bit expensive but what do I do?

Say oh that's a bit expensive and risk her saying well that's the cost and her not do it or just pay it

For comparison last time she charged me £50 to cut my long hair and the 4 DCs hair.

I like the idea of having her hair professionally done and having someone cone to the house to do it.

It is too expensive for me, I cannot afford that much. Would you fancy to give it a go yourself? That I really love, I can spend hours practising styles. Is your little ones hair short or long?

LynetteScavo · 12/04/2013 20:42

I've never heard about first confessions a year before first communion. Around here the DC just rock up on a school night in February. There were about 40 DC, and when the priest invited them to come forward, I have never seen so many keen children. There was was jostling to be first in line!

No one dressed up!

sweetkitty · 12/04/2013 20:43

DD1s hair is a nightmare it's long thick and wavy, tugs very easily, looks messy all the time I would have to straighten it.

We're just having a few people back to our house afterwards but I know there's halls being hired etc

First confession in P3 here, First Communion in P4. When I was at school we did both in P3 but they moved Communion to P4.

LynetteScavo · 12/04/2013 20:50

DD has a fringeless bob. I'm just scooping the front bits of her hair to the back, and sticking in a veil with a comb to hold it in place.

I couldn't even do a French plait, let alone a bun!

mysteryfairy · 12/04/2013 20:57

The salon where I get my hair done has its first appointment at 8am on a Saturday - I regularly go then so it eats up as little of the day as possible. I think if you want her hair up you could look around and find an open salon to do it for less than £40 unless you live somewhere very remote. However my DD made her first communion at 9am Mass on a Sunday and we had to be there at 8.30 so I made the decision to have her hair down as I knew we would be rushed and tense and unable to appreciate the occasion for what it was if we were crowbarring early morning hairdressing in. You might be a less stressy/better early in the morning person than me though!

Same here as Wigglesrock First Confession P3 (age 7) first communion P4 (age 8). It's all so alien to me I'm not RC no one on my side of the family is, DHs family are the only communion I've been to is DHs neice about 11 years ago. MIL is dead, SIL next to useless, FIL dead too, have no contact with my mother so am relying on other Mums really. Hmm

Why dont you put it into rag ringlets overnight. Its very easy and looks pretty. Theres lots of youtube videos on how to do it.

sweetkitty · 12/04/2013 22:26

Thanks there too many ideas on here pity DD1 hates getting her hair done Hmm

Another reason to go with having it loose...

Longdistance · 12/04/2013 23:02

Don't wash het hair before doing it. It's easier to do an up do with the hair a little bit unwashed, like two days unwashed.
If you're unsure, try a little Baptiste dry shampoo, its cheap in body care stores.
As for the ends, try wrapping them around and under the bun where the hairband is. If all else fails, try s larger bun.
Good luck :)

canyou · 12/04/2013 23:47

Could you get a salon to do her hair on fri evening at the last appt and put a scarf or net over it to keep it in place. That is what is done around here

NewFerry · 13/04/2013 07:55

Ok, if you are set on a bun, have you tried putting her hair in a high ponytail, then plait the pony tail, then twist the plait into a bun.
It's much easier as the hair is in one long braid.

SavoyCabbage · 13/04/2013 08:01

I do a bun&source=web&cd=2&ved=0CD8QtwIwAQ&url=.45175338,d.aGc sock bun when I am running late as its so quick. And it looks amazing.

SavoyCabbage · 13/04/2013 08:04
bun. Second time lucky!
Geordieminx · 13/04/2013 08:06

I'll come and do it SK if you want? Not a hairdresser but pretty good at doing my own?

GeneHuntsMistress · 13/04/2013 10:15

I have to do buns for DD's ballet. I've found a bun net makes an amazing difference to the finish, looks so much neater AND stays in the whole time until you take them out! A Revelation to me (another clueless hair do-er despite having reeeaaaallly long hair until 28 years old).

weegiemum · 13/04/2013 10:22

If you're in Glasgow, my hair expert dd1 will come round and do it for £5 plus travel!,

We had family travel from a fair instance to attend the first communion so we had a buffet at the house, plus a special cake.
Traditionally most families will do something special to mark the occasion. With DS we all went out for a special lunch then everyone came back to the house for coffee and cake.
IME the parish often have refreshments ar the parish or school hall after the mass.

NewFerry · 13/04/2013 11:04

Also, a nice way to mark the occasion is to give your dd a small gift such as a first holy communion mass book or bible, or some special rosary beads.

mum11970 · 13/04/2013 11:06

Hair in pony tail, bun ring, clips. Easy as pie. I'm not expert in hair styling, having had short hair for a majority of my life, but a bun is pretty easy with a bun ring.

sovery - were not having a big "thing" all our family live an hour away and there's not many of them anyway. I'm making her a cake myself as I do that as a hobby anyway. Her dress is new but I bought it from a friend who used to have a children's clothes shop so it was at cost. I'm having caterers do a buffet for me and just having everyone back to our house.

I have 3 DDs so at least the dress will be well used.

No I'm coming round to the idea of doing it myself thanks for the offers, we're in North Lanarkshire weegiemum steel mining town Wink

I am the world's worst hairdo doer BUT after 3 years of dd doing ballet I am quite proficient!
You will need-
Practice - alot (but you have time!)
A bun doughnut - cheapest in Primark but on sale in Claires, H&M, supermarkets etc
A hair bun net
Kirby grips
Then You Tube how to do a bun
Hair spray too and not on freshly washed hair as it will be more difficult!

My dd has long, thick hair and looks fine after doing this!
