to take away dd's new book and not replace it?

DD is nearly 10. Today my Dad took her shopping while I did some work. They went to the bookshop and he bought her three books, which she chose for herself. DD showed me the books when they got back.

Two of the books were labelled 'age 9 to 12' - fine. The third one was labelled 'teenage'. It was this one. After flicking through it and checking online reviews I didn't think it was suitable for DD's age. (It features a 15 year old having a sexual relationship with her 14 year old cousin, and the Amazon review says it's suitable for age 14 and older.) So I told DD that I didn't think it appropriate for her age, and that I'll put it away for a couple of years. DD accepted this quite matter of factly, without a quibble, and my Dad was fine about it too (he had been a bit unsure about whether to buy the book and understood that I would screen it as it's labelled teenage.).

However, DH and I have had an argument as he thinks I should buy DD another book to replace the one I confiscated. He also accused me of being patronising. I don't see why I should have to replace the book; she had two other new books plus other treats. She is familiar with the concept that some books are not suitable for her age and I think she knew she was taking a gamble choosing a book labelled 'teenage'. The consequence of that choice is that she has to wait a couple of years to read it. She's not upset.

Her birthday is coming up soon and I've already bought her several books to give her on her birthday. I also took her to the library yesterday, where she chose 12 books. So she's not exactly short of reading material!

So, AIBU?

I have found Common Sense Media to be a reliable guide for age suitability, although I usually read the book myself too before deciding. They suggest 14+ too.

Why not get the receipt from your dad and go and swop it at the shop?

And I don't think you're at all U in vetting your child's reading, although that's not the question!

TantrumsAndBalloons · 12/04/2013 08:28

princess you read every book?

As in, sat down and read every single page?
Really? How old is your DC?

overmydeadbody · 12/04/2013 08:29

Yanbu

But I always actually read a book if I'm unsure of its suitability for D's, rather than go by the blurb or amazon.

Having said that, better to keep the book for another few years when she'll get so much more out of it.

overmydeadbody · 12/04/2013 08:31

Wow princess, I wouldn't read every book, you can tell by a lot of them that they will be fine surely?

piratecat · 12/04/2013 08:31

you could exchange it next chance you get

thegreylady · 12/04/2013 09:03

I also read every book my dc read and most of the books I give to my dgc too. I have a Skype book club going with two dgds where we read and discuss books I buy for them. The current book is Gone and we did The Hunger Games trilogy last year. The girls are 12 and 13. We all enjoy it.
I'd read the book before you decide. I don't know it at all. I would replace it but that's just me. It won't matter if you don't.

My DS was 9 nearly 10 and yep I read them all about 20 in total didn't take long some were really good and I couldn't put them down Smile but I love reading so it really wasn't a chore.

Tyranasaurus · 13/04/2013 16:35

I've read it and it's a crap book. I remember there not being much sexual stuff and being very disapointed. My lasting impression is of a whiny anorexic and some boring war stuff.
