to leave DD unsupervised in the bath?

She is 7. I'm quite often moving about upstairs so hear her chatting to herself or sometimes have a conversation with her.

This came up in conversation with a friend who was horrified and said she thought this was far too young for DD to be left alone in the bathroom.

7 is fine, I used to bathe my little brothers at 7 I was better at doing funny shampoo hair shapes than DM so was requested

PMSL at olympic gold medals for bath scooting though Grin

yaNbu

DD is 7 and I leave her alone in the bath, but I do tend to stay upstairs while she is in it. I might nip downstairs to get something, but I'd go straight back up again. I like to be nearby, just in case, but I don't think it's necessary to be in the same room.

basketweaver2012 · 11/04/2013 19:59

My DD 7 and DS 8 still have baths together and I stay with them whilst we chatter away stop them throwing water all over I do do things upstairs like put stuff away but it would seem odd leaving them! I'm in no way a helicopter parent but its just habit I suppose!
A friend of mine thought it was strange they still bathed together but neither of them seem to find it odd. I'd let them bathe seperately if one of them said they didn't want to do it together anymore but for now it saves time!

ChippingInIsEggceptional · 11/04/2013 20:05

7 Absolutely fine!! Is your friend generally neurotic?

MarianaTrench · 11/04/2013 20:09

7 is practically adult. My 3.5 year old mostly baths herself while I tidy around upstairs and come in and out. She sings and chats the whole time so I know she's ok.

Lueji · 11/04/2013 20:12

Of course you're not. Sigh.

AmazingBouncingYoni · 11/04/2013 20:13

I always remember when I used to leave DS unsupervised.. I would potter about our flat with the bathroom door open and make him sing so I knew he was ok. every now and then he'd go quiet and I would yell "just keep singing!"

Remotecontrolduck · 11/04/2013 20:16

SEVEN?! I thought you were going to say about 3! Christ is she going to expect you to still be sat with her age 13 or something!

What could possibly happen to a seven year old in a bath? (Aside from perhaps slipping over, but that could happen at any age....)

kinkyfuckery · 11/04/2013 20:16

My just-turned-8 year old and very-almost-5 year olds always bathe unsupervised, whilst I potter around putting away clean laundry and tidying their rooms, getting them ready for bedtime.
The 8 year old, I'll occasionally pop downstairs to collect something if I can't convince the 4 year old to go fetch it for me out of laziness

SuffolkNYoni · 11/04/2013 20:18

YANBU for a 7 year old. I have heard of much younger children being left and out of ear shot which made me go Hmm but at 7 is say that's fine.

MsVestibule · 11/04/2013 20:23

Hmm, not sure about this one. My friend's stepson drowned in the bath when he was 7. Apparently his mother took a phone call downstairs (don't know how long for) but in that time, her son feel over in the bath, knocked himself out and drowned. So although I wouldn't feel the need to be in the bathroom with them, I would have to be within listening distance.

MammaTJ · 11/04/2013 20:27

MsVestibule That is awfully sad, but really could even happen to me at the old age of 45.

I do leave my 7 and 6 year old in the bath. My 7 year old also showers and baths by herself. She even runs the bath. (Can you tell 7 year old loves baths and showers, but the 6 year old is reluctant?)

KobayashiMaru · 11/04/2013 20:29

I know a 65 year old who drowned in the bath after falling, that doesn't mean I will be supervising my childrens bathing until they are pensioners!

CrapBag · 11/04/2013 20:30

MsVestibule thats really tragic, I wouldn't ever take a phone call downstairs though, potter about upstairs but I wouldn't go downstairs.

olivertheoctopus · 11/04/2013 20:31

Yikes, my 4 and 2 yo get left in the bath together all the time. Slummy mummy..

shellbu · 11/04/2013 20:38

lol olivertheoctopus ill join your slummy mummy club , i think 7 is totally ok to be in bath alone .

numbum · 11/04/2013 20:39

A relative of mine still runs baths for her DS, sits and chats to him while he's in the bath AND dries him. All fine until you realise he's nearly 15 Hmm. I don't know which is more shocking, the fact that she does it or the fact that he lets her!

Iwaswatchingthat · 11/04/2013 20:45

I potter upstairs whilst my 8 and 6 year old are in the bath. It is the only chance I get to do anything. I know they are fine cos they never stop talking re enacting water births with baby Annabelle

MsVestibule · 11/04/2013 20:46

MammaTJ Of course it could happen to anybody, but I feel that young children are less likely to be careful than an older child or adult. As a general rule, the older you get, the more cautious you become, and I think that 7 is just too young to be left completely unsupervised.

numbum Shock, just Shock!
