to not "get" dip dyed hair?

Just really annoyed someone because I asked if she was growing out her blonde highlights only to receive a filthy look and be told that she had had her hair dip dyed.

It apparently cost a fortune but it really does look like she is growing out her old colour and needs a trim! It looks awful!

Properly gradated, on a boho person, it can look great. The way it is usually done, with half the hair a rather nasty shade of orange and the other half brown, and no graduation between the two, just basically a line, does not look good.

OTOH, in blue, purple or red it looks awesome. But that is just me!

magicstar1 · 11/04/2013 12:18

I have this, but I have very long dark hair, about the last 4 inches are now died bright red. It does look intentional, and if I get sick of it I can just get it cut off and still have loads of hair left lol.

Though my father did spot it the other night (after 4 months!) and say it looks stupid.

I've seen the natural colour contrasts referred to as ombre, and the unatural colours dip dyed. Might just be made up fash mag speak though.

I like both.

Mine does it anyway, my highlights bleach lighter and lighter at the ends, pity about the grey at the top Wink

Coffeenowplease · 11/04/2013 13:28

I have dip dyed hair. I love it and think it looks great.

GobShizz · 11/04/2013 13:33

It's an ombre if it's a natural-looking fade of two "normal" hair colours into one another. It's a "dip-dye" if there's a definite "line" of bleaching and/or strong, bright colours involved. I have "ombre" hair, and it just looks like I've spent a week or two in the sun so the ends are a shade or two lighter than the rest, which is the best way, tbh.

YANBU. It looks awful, except for the aforementioned sunkissed type.

Remotecontrolduck · 11/04/2013 13:37

Ombre/blended subtle dip die looks absolutely fab when done well. A harsh line where the two colours meet quite often looks awful, but not always when it's done with a bright colour.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 11/04/2013 13:48

I like it.

I did mine last summer, the top half was normal dark brown and the bottom half bright pink. Then when it was time to go back to school in September I just cut the pink off.

I liked it on Kimberley Walsh but obviously she could probably carry off anything. And I think Alexa Chung had a similar style a while back and of course looked painfully fashionable as always. Wavy and shoulder length carrys the style best - on a young fashionably dressed twenty something.
