Do a lot of walking with my DCs, one of my DCs and I were telling someone about how we did 8 miles the other day (not all in 1 go) DC was very proud about it, they enjoy it! Youngest DC gets carried most of the way or pushchair. Anyway she was saying that it can damage their legs and stop their growth, distrupt their development and its just 'not fair' on them. DC even said 'but it is fun and we like it' anyway the woman went on about it and I said 'thanks for your concern but I think you're wrong about this' she carried on and I'll admit I did end up saying 'nope that's wrong'

Was she just trying to help? Is she correct? My kids enjoy it, does that matter or is it bad for them? I've honestly got no bloody idea now, when I was a kid my mum would walk sometimes 20 miles a day (we used to travel around england in a wagon and she would walk at the side of it) so I did A LOT of walking, it didn't do me any harm I'm a normal height and don't have any problems relating to walking... but its hard for me to not worry about her being right that it could be harmful I mean they don't walk 20 miles a day or anything but I'm sure they walk more than the average kid/adult, they're very very active and I told the woman they are very active, also doing other physical acticities and she said 'it all adds up, you don't see the harm now but it could catch up with them' which to be honest I am finding it hard to understand

Am I BU should I listen to this woman

Completely agree its best to get your exercise as part of your day to day life instead of going to a gym etc.

Stunts growth
I grew up in a family with no car that walked for fun
I'm 5ft 11 my brother is 6ft 4
Quite glad out heights were stunted then Grin

I too don't drive so my children also have to walk. 8 miles is easily doable, even my 3 year old will happily do that with the right breaks and food (bribes).

She's talking pants and trying to make excuses for being too lazy in joining her children in getting a bit of exercise

AmazingBouncingYoni · 11/04/2013 10:22

That is hilarious.

The human body is designed to move.

You should give her the book Born to Run for her to read. Slightly bigger scale than walking but it'll give her something to think about Wink

HellonHeels · 11/04/2013 10:29

Was this woman by any chance flabby and unfit? Surely only someone who doesn't exercise would think that walking is harmful?

ellajayne · 11/04/2013 10:37

YANBU. We don't walk half as much as you do but I am constantly told the walk to school and back (20 minutes with a slow walking 2 year old) is too much. She loves to walk and since she's overweight it's really good for her health.

If your children are happy and healthy you're doing a fab job.

I took my 4 DCs to the Peak District this week and we did about 6 miles. And that's a short walk to get us ready for the season!! The you gets has been doing this since she was about 3 or 4 - we've done 20 miles before, just need lots of stops and snacks.
I do make sure they wear proper walking shoes though.
So I definitely think YANBU!

MushroomSoup · 11/04/2013 10:49

The YOU?! Youngest!

CheerfulYank · 11/04/2013 10:52

Ridiculous!

DS has walked a mile to the store and a mile back with me since he was about 3 and you wouldn't believe the comments I get about it.

arabesque · 11/04/2013 10:58

It sounds daft.

She's probably one of those people who would prefer to sit in rush hour traffic for half an hour with the kids in the back, than spend ten minutes walking them to the local school.

EuroShaggleton · 11/04/2013 11:58

Ridiculous. I love walking - good exercise, clears the head and makes me feel much better than being stuck on a stuffy bus. What does she think people did for the millenia before the invention of the car? Silly woman. Ignore, and head off on a lovely long walk.
