AIBU to think I will go to hell for putting a Bible in the recycling?

Dh and I are having a huge sort out of all our books. He's already taken a big pile to the charity shop, and we've binned/recycled a load of stuff that wasn't fit for the charity shop. Now we are sorting through some of the other books, and we have thirteen editions of the Bible - one I got when I was christened, ones we got when the dses were dedicated, and various others we have acquired over the years - especially when I was attending a very active evangelical church.

I have decided that I can live without my copy of The Bible in a Year, and dh has put it in the recycling (I made notes in it so can't send it to the charity shop). I am afraid I will go to hell for recycling or binning a bible - AIBU?

Does Jesus not recycle?

BlackeyedSusan · 06/04/2013 15:23

you do not go to hell for recycling a Bible.

HairyGrotter · 06/04/2013 15:23

YABVU given Hell does not exist and the bible is merely a long winded story. Just another tale so can be lobbed in the bin or recycled (I vote bin, poorly written and boring)

Bilbobagginstummy · 06/04/2013 15:23

Is it worse to bin than to recycle?

MagratOfStolat · 06/04/2013 15:23

Did you burn it in the back garden naked, whilst simultaneously sacrificing a vestal virgin and the goat you got from your benefits lifestyle?

If not, you're fine.

YouTheCat · 06/04/2013 15:24

Or what Magrat said. Grin

Tigerbomb · 06/04/2013 15:26

I feel for you - I am the same, I have a spare couple of bibles and a copy of the Koran that are still on my bookshelves because it feels wrong to put them in recycling

MarvellousYou · 06/04/2013 15:27

God forgives, I think he'll be pleased it didn't end up in land fill.

monsterchild · 06/04/2013 15:28

I have a book of Mormon in German, bin or recycle?

WaitingForMe · 06/04/2013 15:29

I thought the Koran was a full on hellfire job - they aren't even meant to touch the floor if I remember rightly.

Never heard anything about respect needed for Bibles.

zwischenzug · 06/04/2013 15:30

Little point in giving a logical answer here given that organised religion is illogical in the extreme. If putting a bible in the recycling has a profound negative mental effect on you, perhaps you shouldn't do it. Or you should wait until you come to the realisation that organised religion makes no sense and then recycle it.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 06/04/2013 15:30

Whew!

Magrat - thankfully for the neighbours' sanity and eyes, it is too chilly for me to dance naked in the garden here. And I have no goat - though ds1 has bet dh £50 that by the time he (ds1) is 40, he will have kept a goat for a full year.

Well - we are damned together, then, zukiecat!! I would have put Jesus in the cupboard too.

I have 14 bibles don't you know, its hard to find a strong enough bookcase

FeckOffCup · 06/04/2013 15:33

Does that mean that conversely I go to heaven for putting my copy of fifty shades of grey into the recycling rather than inflicting it on anyone else?

HairyGrotter · 06/04/2013 15:35

A huge Jesus? Fuck that, I'd have tied stones to it and lobbed it in the river. It's what he would've wanted (if he had existed)

YouTheCat · 06/04/2013 15:35

50 Shades should be burnt, just in case some poor soul should get their hands on it.

MagratOfStolat · 06/04/2013 15:35

No FeckOff: That you need to burn, if it even will ignite after all the bodily fluids....
Wink

FeckOffCup · 06/04/2013 15:38

No bodily fluids on mine, sadly egotistical controlling arseholes do not float my boat even if they do have a really really tragic backstory Hmm.

HoppinMad · 06/04/2013 15:39

Tiger Maybe drop koran off at a local mosque if theres one nearby? I'm sure theyd rather you did that then recycle.

Same for the bibles, take them to a church if they are no longer needed.

MurkyMinotaur · 06/04/2013 15:45

Christians believe that the bible's contents are from God and tell us about Jesus. But the actual physical book is just paper and ink. We worship Jesus rather than the bible itself. So absolutely no problem to throw one in the recycling!

SquirrelNuts · 06/04/2013 16:03

If thhats the case I'll see you down there, I recycled the one we were given at school when I was 16

HoHoHoNoYouDont · 06/04/2013 16:11

What Hoppin said.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 06/04/2013 16:12

I bought dd1 a purple glittery Jesus for Christmas a few years ago, from Paperchase, and a (lovely in every other way) friend said that she thought it was blasphemous.

We had a big clean out at work a few months ago and the cleaner wouldn't throw away a battered old bible because she thought it would be irreverent, so I had to do it. I suspect I sold my soul a long time ago, if indeed I ever had one. :)
