Hate is such a strong emotion but it's the only thing I feel for him. Charmless, idiotic bastard. But hey, him and his family are alright. Must be lovely not to worry about keeping your kids warm eh Dave?

Also I wish that if people were going to have a pop at politicians they should leave their backgrounds out of it. If you were ranting about someone being disgustingly working class it would seem unreasonable to many on here who happily support what they see as 'toff bashing'.

It is cheap and easy point scoring and it does little to enhance your arguments. And don't say it's relevant because they don't understand how us poor people live - don't delude yourselves! Of course they understand - they are politicians and that's their job. The just don't care.

It's not just politicians. I had a time of being unemployed and verging on poverty which I got out of because I was young and my family helped me. I am now 'established middle' (arf) with corresponding social group and they have not a clue how easy it is for this to come about and then spiral downwards. It is laughable to listen to the assumptions they make about my moral fibre or the value of my education. Quite simply my family gave me some money so I didn't have to continue working on a zero hours contract for just enough per week money to pay rent and eat. My contemporaries will not accept that I had that advantage. Apparently anyone and everyone can get out of the poverty trap.

Countrykitten, but it is entirely relevant if people have had a privileged upbringing. It's another bloody world! Same soil, entirely different existence. I do not want privileged politicians. I want politicians who have bloody WORKED with all sorts of people and who are not interested in pandering to the needs of either the rich or the poor, but in making a fair country where we are not in thrall to landowners, financial institutions or anyone else who represents the interests of the very, very limited.

I can think of a politician who kind of fits the bill in your description SP.

The very, very privileged and rather wonderful Tony Benn. But presumably he doesn't work for you as you think that people cannot see beyond their own upbringings?

In fact what we need is exceptional leaders - I couldn't give a damn about someone's background if they are a person with integrity and a great leader. It is silly (imo) to assume that a person who has had an average or poor upbringing will be a better leader than one who has grown up around privilege.

The fact is the Labour,Tory, Lib Dem, Green, UKIP etc are packed to the gills with the unexceptional and I think that THIS is the real issue.

I don't even want to think about the depths of ignorance betrayed by some of my so-called friends and relatives about how 'Those People' live. You know, The Others. The ones it's OK to blame and hate.

The awful remarks about 'single parents' - even DH was guilty of that on one (and only one!) occasion, and he actually MARRIED one (me!) The looks of blank amazement when I pull family members up ('but we don't mean people like YOU!! You aren't one of THEM' - meaning a promiscuous illiterate teenager. Sneers about benefit claimants, forgetting that DH and I spent our first year of married life on the dole after we were both made redundant. He spent a year on sickness benefit too after a serious motorbike accident.

I've actually stopped caring what they think any more and have started posting really snarky and highly political shit all over Facebook. The responses I've been getting from certain people have been errr, enlightening to say the least.

Is it empathy by-pass or just a total failure of imagination? It should be so simple really. Just walk a mile in someone's shoes.

they are all knobs although I did catch my MP in hospital in his PJ's having an op. Only normal MP Ive ever met. Asda PJ's too . He wont be living those down in a hurry.

His fucking welfare reform bollocks attacking decent people and not the actual scrougers is now having quite a devastating effect on my familys life now. I am actually despairing at what we are going to do. But DC and his cronies don't actually give a shit about us do they!

Tony Benn is indeed one of the exceptions. And good for him. However, most Labour politicians are absolutely as greedy, selfish and hungry for money as Tory ones. MP's expenses were certainly proof of that.

YANBU - he and Osborne are both despicable human beings. If the tories do manage to win next time I'll bet it won't be with him as leader. Even his own party don't like him.
