I went to fetch my friend's DS from the CM today as she was running late.

I'd been told to go to the back door so I did, it opens into the kitchen and when she answered it her DH was at the kitchen table smoking a roll up Hmm

Another mindees mum was there collecting at the time (so there were 2 mindees in the kitchen) and didn;t seem fazed but I thought it wasn't allowed? And I mentioned it to my friend who said she had seen it before but didn;t know if it was allowed or not and that she doesn;t like it but can't find another CM with vacancies locally.

So what is the law/guidelines on it, does anyone know?

i beg to differ but that is what's great about being a childminder, i probably have things you dont. But when i was last inspected OFSTED didnt mention it (i do have a lovely NO SMOKING picture on one of our art boards done by a schoolie when we looked at health)

Did I say all childminders are crap? Did i generalise anyone? Get a grip. I said this was one of the reasons I wouldn't use a childminder. I'm sure there's loads of good ones but I still wouldn't use one for many reasons and this is one. Try reading properly next time before you make assumptions.

And let me make clear I am absolutely NOT saying all CMs are rubbish as I know some fabulous ones!

And my friend has just FB messaged me to say she is going to look at registering as one herself, would solve her own childcare problems and give local parents a decent alternative Grin

Electrical I would have agreed that it wasn't a requirement until I read that link.

Now you mention it though OFSTED never mentioned the fact I had one either :)

bloody hell eh? another Wink

I think that's a great idea that your friend registers herself. How awful that she can act unprofessionally just because she's the only option in the area.
There seems to be a couple of childminding bashing threads going on tonight ( I understand you are not doing that yourself op).
But please don't put us down, most of us are hard working, flexible, professional, caring childminders who welcome children and parents into our homes and our families. I'm lucky that I am fully appreciated by my the lovely families I work for but will soon be l

...looking for new work and I don't want potential parents put off of childminders because of sweeping generalisations.
Good luck to your friend Op

sneezing you said you wouldn't use a childminder because some are crap. Using that logic you can't send your DC to school because some teachers are crap. You can't go to the doctor or the dentist because some of them will be crap. You can't go on a train or a bus or in a taxi because some of them will be crap. You can't use bank or a shop because no doubt some of the people who work there will be crap. You can't eat out or get a takeaway because some of them are crap.

I think finding a childminder (doctor/teacher/shop assistant)who isn't crap, rather than avoiding all childminders (doctors/teacher/shop assistants) is a more logical way to approach it?

Good on your friend op. it's a fabulous business and I loved it.
