..you should put a warning?

Yes, they can be quite windy. My advice is to not add them to anything when you are planning a quiet evening.

wisemanscamel · 03/04/2013 18:57

YANBU. They are really bad.

MadameDefarge · 03/04/2013 19:19

if you cook them with a pinch of asoefetida this will not happen. good for all things windy too.

GrendelsMum · 03/04/2013 19:29

Apparently your response to them is genetic. Some people have farty genes, and some don't.

DH and I are both non-farty and we love them!

YANBU.
We call them fartichokes, with good reason.

GrendelsMum · 03/04/2013 20:48

Well, then DH suggested maybe we just farted a lot anyway! Wink

ElectricSoftParade · 03/04/2013 21:02

Genetic you say? I love the taste but I am foul after eating them Blush.

I mean seriously foul.

NettoSuperstar · 03/04/2013 21:05

I ate them once, really enjoyed them, my IBS did not.

Tanith · 03/04/2013 21:06

It's spelt 'asafoetida'

As discovered by me when I tried to find it on all the online shops I could think of just now.

They didn't have it when it was spelt right, either.

I'll have to pop down the Health food shop and embarrass myself with my attempts to pronounce it.

seekingpeaceandquiet · 03/04/2013 21:10

Or you could try an asian shop asking for Hing Tanith they should have it.

CheCazzo · 03/04/2013 21:13

DH once ate a whole artichoke pie when we were on holiday in Venice. Worst night of my life - that's all I'm saying Grin

MooMinCow · 03/04/2013 21:16

Tanith - go to an Indian grocers and ask for 'Hing'. Comes in small plastic pots and v. Cheap. Is used as an onion/garlic substitute for some Indian communities and a pinch added to beans/pulses helps counteract any farty issues Wink

Tanith · 03/04/2013 21:16

Thank you, Seeking! That's much easier to pronounce Grin

No Asian store in town, unfortunately: small semi-rural town that thinks the health food shop is living dangerously!

Tanith · 03/04/2013 21:17

...and Moomin, too Smile

I love artichokes. I also childmind... Grin

meditrina · 03/04/2013 21:21

Well, activated carbon capsules as chasers might help. A bit.

MooMinCow · 03/04/2013 21:21

Try Natco online (big supplier of Indian spices). If you google there are a few online spice stores.

But coming back to OP, I eat most vegetables but artichokes always leave me disappointed and feeling a bit meh really Hmm

complexnumber · 03/04/2013 21:26

Mrs60 thought they were pickled aavvarcadoes last night. How silll

Tanith · 03/04/2013 21:26

Will do! Thanks!

Jamie Oliver did a very nice beef stew with them in. It's very popular with the kids. Not so popular afterwards with their parents Grin

complexnumber · 03/04/2013 21:30

Mrs60 thought they were pickled aavvarcadoes last night. How silly of me and my typereyin

Startail · 03/04/2013 21:35

'D'MIL feed DH and me artichoke soup one 31 Dec and then sent us of to a New Years party.

I spent the entire evening moving round the room, pretending the dubious odour was nothing to do with me [bublush]

Startail · 03/04/2013 21:37

Boo Hoo, No rabbits, my tail wants to keep bunnies all year
=:-( ?

chocoluvva · 03/04/2013 21:39

:o

I've tried asafoetida with pulses and beans. To no avail though.

MooMinCow · 03/04/2013 21:46

Choco - are you frying it or just adding it with seasonings? Is best fried or tempered in hot oil/ghee

whois · 03/04/2013 22:24

Can't be as bad as the root vegetable stew I made at the weekend: silent but deadly. Won't be making that again!
